TLDR
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) as mentioned in this paper is a continuous, ongoing annual survey of the non-institutionalized civilian resident population of the United States.
Abstract
Background-Starting in 1999, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) became a continuous, ongoing annual survey of the noninstitutionalized civilian resident population of the United States. A continuous survey allowed content to change to meet emerging needs. Objective-This report describes how NHANES for 1999-2010 was designed and implemented. NHANES is a national survey designed to provide national estimates on various health-related topics. Methods-The survey used in-person face-to-face interviews and physical examinations for data collection. Approximately 5,000 people per year participated in NHANES. The 5,000 people surveyed each year are representative of the entire U.S. population.

Associations between urinary organophosphate ester metabolites and measures of adiposity among U.S. children and adults: NHANES 2013-2014.

TL;DR: Exposure to select OPEs may be differentially associated with body size among children and adults, and there is consistent evidence of sexually-dimorphic associations for other OPE metabolites.

Ten-year weight gain in smokers who quit, smokers who continued smoking and never smokers in the United States, NHANES 2003-2012.

TL;DR: In a current, nationally representative sample of smokers who continued to smoke and those who quit, baseline BMI and CPD were important factors that contributed to the magnitude of long-term weight gain following smoking cessation.

Seasonal Variations of Complete Blood Count and Inflammatory Biomarkers in the US Population - Analysis of NHANES Data

TL;DR: This large population-based study found notable seasonal variations in blood cell composition and inflammatory biomarkers, with a more pro-inflammatory immune system seen in winter-spring than summer-fall.

Metformin Use in Prediabetes Among U.S. Adults, 2005–2012

TL;DR: Metformin use was <1% among U.S. adults with prediabetes and only slightly more common among those with additional risk factors for diabetes, and did not vary by race, poverty-to-income ratio, or education.

Parabens and measures of adiposity among adults and children from the U.S. general population: NHANES 2007-2014.

TL;DR: Significant inverse associations between adiposity measures and paraben biomarker concentrations among adults and children in the U.S. general population are observed and mechanisms by which parabens could alter metabolism are elucidated.
