TLDR
A new culture system for cells from the mammalian brain was developed by a modification of a previously established technique using fluorodeoxyuridine and adult horse serum, which will allow, in culture, detailed multidisciplinary analyses of individual neurons and small networks of neurons from the mammal brain.

Rat hippocampal neurons in dispersed cell culture

TL;DR: There is a clear relationship between the stage of the cells' development and their growth in culture and in the presence of hippocampal explants the initial growth of the isolated cells is improved and their survival in culture is extended to about two weeks.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mouse spinal cord in cell culture. I. Morphology and intrinsic neuronal electrophysiologic properties.

TL;DR: Reliable methods for establishing fetal mouse spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion cells in long term (greater than 1 mo) dissociated cell cultures are described and current-voltage relationships and linear electrotonic properties of the neurons are described.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rat cortical neurons in cell culture: culture methods, cell morphology, electrophysiology, and synapse formation.

TL;DR: Rat cortical neurons from 15 day embryos are grown in dissociated cell culture and maintained in vitro for 8--12 weeks and develop into forms which resemble mature cortical neurons in situ, stain with silver and exhibit passive and active electrophysiological properties similar to those of cortical neurons.
Journal ArticleDOI

The induction of acetylcholine synthesis in primary cultures of dissociated rat sympathetic neurons: I. Effects of conditioned medium☆

TL;DR: The results suggest that CM acts by altering the differentiated fate of individual sympathetic neurons rather than by causing the selective survival or growth of a second population of neurons.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pharmacological characterization of different types of GABA and glutamate receptors in vertebrates and invertebrates.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a list of abbreviations for nouns and adjectives: list of abbreviations 118.1.2.3.3].

Protein Measurement with the Folin Phenol Reagent

TL;DR: Procedures are described for measuring protein in solution or after precipitation with acids or other agents, and for the determination of as little as 0.2 gamma of protein.
Journal ArticleDOI

Synapse formation between dissociated nerve and muscle cells in low density cell cultures

TL;DR: Some of the neurons dissociated from embryonic chick spinal cord and maintained in low density cell cultures establish functional contacts with muscle fibers that had formed in vitro from previously plated myoblasts.
Journal ArticleDOI

Markers for gene expression in cultured cells from the nervous system.

TL;DR: Methods are presented for preparation of extracts from cultured cells from the nervous system and for study of choline acetyltransferase, acetylcholinesterase, glutamate decarboxylase, and catechol O-methyltransferase activities, which are markers that can be used for studying gene expression in neurons.
