New simple spectrophotometric assay of total carotenes in margarines

TLDR
For the first time saponification step used in determination of carotenes in margarines was omitted leading to a substantial cost saving and reduction of time needed to complete the analysis.

Determination of Antioxidant Content and Activity in Eight Jordanian Fresh Green Leafy Vegetables

TL;DR: The consumption of vegetables that contain natural antioxidants is thought to be an efficient way for reducing the risk for oxidative stress diseases and determination of antioxidant content and capacity allows the screening of vegetables probably involved in the prevention and/ or treatment of oxidativestress diseases.

Is the simple calibration accurate enough for spectrophotometric screening of total carotenoids in corn flours

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared different calibration approaches when applied to spectrophotometric analysis of total carotenoids (TC) in yellow corn products and concluded that the analyst is allowed to use simple calibration in hexane with BC or TC when screening large number of samples in breeding experiments or other routine trials.

Can dietary beta-carotene materially reduce human cancer rates?

TL;DR: If dietary β-carotene is truly protective—which could be tested by controlled trials—there are a number of theoretical mechanisms whereby it might act, some of which do not directly involve its ‘provitamin A’ activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification, Quantification, and Relative Concentrations of Carotenoids and Their Metabolites in Human Milk and Serum

TL;DR: Thirty-four carotenoids, including 13 geometrical isomers and eight metabolites, in breast milk and serum of three lactating mothers have been separated, identified, quantified, and compared by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-photodiode array (PDA) detection-mass spectrometry (MS).
