TLDR
In this paper, the authors proposed a hydraulic performance estimation method focusing on low-head turbine units, which is conducted by using CFD analysis and based on site test results, and introduced the concept of plant hydraulic efficiency, as regards the flow interaction between turbine unit, intake and tailrace.

Transient characteristics during power-off process in a shaft extension tubular pump by using a suitable numerical model

TL;DR: In this paper, two kinds of water surface treatment, namely volume of fluids (VOF) and rigid-lid hypothesis (RLH) methods, for upstream and downstream reservoirs, are compared and corresponding results are compared.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transient characteristics during the co-closing guide vanes and runner blades of a bulb turbine in load rejection process

TL;DR: In this article, the transient characteristics associated with the machine load rejection process are investigated due to its close relationship with hydraulic facilities' safety in low-head tubular turbines, especially in double-regulated bulb turbine.
Journal ArticleDOI

Experimental investigation of a model bulb turbine under steady state and load rejection process

TL;DR: In this article, a model test on both the steady state and transient process were designed and conducted in an ultra-low head bulb turbine, and the results provided a sound reference for the design and operation of tubular turbine units.
Journal ArticleDOI

Numerical Analysis on the Hydraulic Thrust and Dynamic Response Characteristics of a Turbine Pump

TL;DR: In this paper , the axial and radial hydraulic thrust of a prototype turbine pump in turbine mode was analyzed, and then the dynamic response characteristics of the turbine pump shafting was determined, which could provide guidance for the operating and optimization of the unit, which helps the safe and stable operation of the station.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fatigue analysis in rotor of a prototype bulb turbine based on fluid-structure interaction

TL;DR: In this paper, a prototype bulb turbine rotor suffered cracks, probably due to erosion and welding defects, and the dynamic stress characteristics were analyzed under not only the non-cracked shaft condition but also the cracked one, to find possible causes of the failure.

The design and application of upwind schemes on unstructured meshes

TL;DR: Cell-centered and mesh-vertex upwind finite-volume schemes are developed which utilize multi-dimensional monotone linear reconstruction procedures which differ from existing algorithms (even on structured meshes).

On the sensitization of turbulence models to rotation and curvature

TL;DR: In this article, a measure of the extra influence on the turbulence which is invariant, fully defined in three dimensions, and unifies rotation and curvature effects is proposed, at the expense of involving higher derivatives than the traditional (non-invariant) terms do.

The costs of small-scale hydro power production: Impact on the development of existing potential.

TL;DR: In this paper, empirical formulae to estimate the cost of electro-mechanical equipment and the costs of different types of turbines were developed through statistical analysis of cost data obtained from a range of turbine manufacturers.

Numerical evaluation of the clearance geometries effect on the flow field and performance of a hydrofoil

TL;DR: In this paper, a simplified case of NACA0009 hydrofoil in a water tunnel is used to investigate the effects of tip clearance geometries including the foil tip shape and gap width on the flow features and foil performance.

Numerical prediction on the effect of free surface vortex on intake flow characteristics for tidal power station

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of surface vortices on operating conditions of two-phase flows were simulated with a simplified reservoir model, and the predicted surface vortex agreed well with various analytical models.
