Crack growth criteria incorporating non-singular stresses: size effect in apparent fracture toughness

TL;DR: In this paper, simple criteria accounting for the non-singular stresses at the crack tip are considered, based on the comparison of the local stress concentration with the material microstrength, and it is shown that when the load can be resolved into a superposition of elementary loads, the size effect can asymptotically be presented as a weighted sum of the elementary size effects (i.e. the size effects associated with the elementary loads).

Stress field interaction and strain energy distribution between a stationary main crack and its process zone

TL;DR: In this article, the damage process zone developed by brittle materials in front of a macro-crack is simulated by means of a distribution of micro-cracks, and the main features of the interaction phenomena turn out to be almost independent of the microcrack density.

Hybrid crack-tip element and its applications

TL;DR: In this paper, a hybrid crack-tip element with a distribution of traction along the crack surfaces is developed, where linear superposition and approximate functions based on the linear elasticity theory are employed in the formulation.

Effects of dislocation pile-up and nanocracks on the main crack propagation in crystalline metals under uniaxial tensile load

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the interaction between the main crack propagation and micro-defects (i.e., dislocations, grain boundaries and nanocracks) under uniaxial tensile load theoretically.

Crack tip shielding by micro-cracking in brittle solids

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of profuse micro-cracking at the tip of a macroscopic crack is studied with emphasis on the reduction in stress intensity, or shielding, within the microcrack region.

Microcrack coalescence and macroscopic crack growth initiation in brittle solids

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of microcracks on crack growth initiation in brittle solids was investigated with a view to determining the range of dominance of each mechanism, and the extent of shielding of the crack tip by the intervening micro-cracks was estimated under isotropic damage conditions.

Microcrack toughening in alumina/zirconia

TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of microcrack toughening in Al 2 O 3 ZrO 2 is presented, which consists of experimental measurements of the microcracks parameters that dictate the predicted level of toughness, as well as calculations of the toughness using micro-crack models based on the micro cracks observed in the process zone.
