General concepts relating to disorders of micturition are discussed at the conclusion of this chapter.
Abstract
Paraparesis (paraplegia) refers to partial (-paresis) or complete (-plegia) loss of voluntary motor function in the pelvic limbs. Similar involvement of all four limbs is termed tetraparesis (tetraplegia). Paraparesis generally results from spinal cord lesions caudad to the second thoracic spinal cord segment, whereas tetraparesis occurs because of lesions craniad to this segment (see discussion of spinal cord lesion localization in The Neurologic Examination and Lesion Localization, on page 328). The limbs may be affected equally; however, asymmetric lesions cause greater clinical involvement on the ipsilateral side. Strictly unilateral lesions at C1-T2 result in clinical involvement on only the affected side of the body (hemiparesis, hemiplegia). Monoparesis (monoplegia) occurs subsequent to unilateral T2-S1 lesions. Trauma and neoplasia are the most common spinal cord diseases affecting cats. Urinary and fecal incontinence often occur concomitant with paresis. General concepts relating to disorders of micturition are discussed at the conclusion of this chapter.

Axonal regeneration of Clarke's neurons beyond the spinal cord injury scar after treatment with chondroitinase ABC.

TL;DR: The results show that axonal regeneration in the spinal cord can be promoted by degradation of CSPG with chondroitinase ABC, and suggests that C SPG is inhibitory to the regeneration of neurons inThe spinal cord after traumatic injury.

Bypassing the Natural Visual-Motor Pathway to Execute Complex Movement Related Tasks Using Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Sets

TL;DR: A novel approach to provide rehabilitative support to patients suffering from neurological damage in their pre-frontal, parietal and/or motor cortex regions is introduced and interval type-2 fuzzy realization outperforms its classical type-1 counterpart and back-propagation neural approaches in all experimental cases.

Spinal Cord Hemisection Facilitates Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase Cells to Produce Serotonin in the Subchronic but Not the Chronic Phase

TL;DR: Plastic changes of the 5-HT system might happen primarily in the subchronic phase and for longer period its function could be compensated by plastic changes of other intrinsic and/or supraspinal modulation systems.

Retrospective analysis of diagnoses and outcomes of 45 cats with micturition disorders presenting as urinary incontinence.

TL;DR: Urinary incontinence in cats was associated with a variety of congenital and acquired disorders that affected both phases of micturition with similar frequency and warrant a more guarded prognosis than do cats with bladder or urethral disorders.

Neurological physiotherapy in labrador retriever dog with paraparesis: a case report

TL;DR: It is believed that the dog’s young age and the type of injury (neurapraxia) contributed to these positive results, and early and active physiotherapy program plays a crucial role in maintaining functional independence, also coping with the symptoms in the dog.
