TLDR
Results suggest that feedback, situation consideration, and teaching and instruction are essential antecedents to self-determined motivation.
Abstract
In the present study, we tested the effects of specific dimensions of perceived teaching behaviors on students' self-determined motivation in physical education. In accordance with the tenets of self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 2000), we expected the psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness would mediate these effects. Secondary school students (N = 498) ages 12–17 years completed measures of perceived teaching behaviors for seven dimensions: (a) democratic behavior, (b) autocratic behavior, (c) teaching and instruction, (d) situation consideration, (e) positive general feedback, (f) positive nonverbal feedback, and (h) negative nonverbal feedback. They also completed measures of perceived satisfaction for competence, autonomy, relatedness, and self-determined motivation. A path-analytic model revealed a positive, indirect effect of perceived positive general feedback on self-determined motivation. The effects of perceived autocratic behavior and negative nonverb...

Testing a Continuum Structure of Self-Determined Motivation: A Meta-Analysis

TL;DR: Results largely supported a continuum-like structure of motivation and indicate that self-determination is central in explaining human motivation, but did not support the inclusion of integrated regulation or the 3 subscales of intrinsic motivation.

Self-determination theory applied to physical education: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the evidence regarding self-determination theory within the school physical education context and applied a multilevel structural equation modeling approach to meta-analyze data from a systematic review that identified 265 relevant studies.

Research on Self-Determination in Physical Education: Key Findings and Proposals for Future Research.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a critical review of 74 self-determination theory-grounded peer-reviewed studies in the field of physical education, to identify research gaps, and to provide suggestions for moving this line of research forward by discussing how insights from a pedagogical view can contribute to the development of SDT-based research.

Observed need-supportive and need-thwarting teaching behavior in physical education: Do teachers' motivational orientations matter?

TL;DR: In this paper, a cross-sectional study explored the relations between PE teachers' autonomous and controlled motivational orientations and a variety of observed need-supportive and need-thwarting teaching behaviors in 79 PE classes by means of regression analyses.

Motivation, Learning Strategies, and Performance in Physical Education at Secondary School

TL;DR: In this article, a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) process model of learning strategy use as it related to participation and performance in physical education courses in eighth through tenth grades was tested.

The moderator–mediator variable distinction in social psychological research: Conceptual, strategic, and statistical considerations.

TL;DR: This article seeks to make theorists and researchers aware of the importance of not using the terms moderator and mediator interchangeably by carefully elaborating the many ways in which moderators and mediators differ, and delineates the conceptual and strategic implications of making use of such distinctions with regard to a wide range of phenomena.

Cutoff criteria for fit indexes in covariance structure analysis : Conventional criteria versus new alternatives

TL;DR: In this article, the adequacy of the conventional cutoff criteria and several new alternatives for various fit indexes used to evaluate model fit in practice were examined, and the results suggest that, for the ML method, a cutoff value close to.95 for TLI, BL89, CFI, RNI, and G...

The "What" and "Why" of Goal Pursuits: Human Needs and the Self-Determination of Behavior

TL;DR: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as mentioned in this paper maintains that an understanding of human motivation requires a consideration of innate psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness, emphasizing that needs specify the necessary conditions for psychological growth, integrity, and well-being.
