Predicting friction reliably and accurately in journal bearings – The importance of extensive oil-models

TLDR
In this paper, the impact of neglecting the hydrodynamic pressure dependence of the lubricant in the oil-model employed in the simulation is investigated, and the results obtained with both oil-models agree closely with the experimental values only for full film lubrication.

Simulation of journal bearing friction in severe mixed lubrication – Validation and effect of surface smoothing due to running-in

TL;DR: In this paper, a simulation approach for journal bearings operating from hydrodynamic to mixed lubrication regime where severe metal-metal contact occurs is presented, and the simulation results in the form of Stribeck curves provide a solid base to prove the isothermal elastohydrodynamic simulation approach.

Predicting friction reliably and accurately in journal bearings—A systematic validation of simulation results with experimental measurements

TL;DR: In this article, an elastohydrodynamic (EHD) calculation using an extensive oil-model and including an approach to the conformal roughness of the bearing surfaces is carried out for transient loads typical for current utility vehicles (40MPa) as well as for considerably higher specific loads (70 MPa) and for different lubricants (SAE10, SAE20,SAE30 and SAE40) to account for a large span of working conditions.

Impact of high pressure and shear thinning on journal bearing friction

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of the piezoviscous effect and non-Newtonian lubricant properties on the friction power losses in journal bearings over a wide range of dynamic loads and shaft speeds was investigated.

On the Characteristics of Misaligned Journal Bearings

TL;DR: A literature review of misalignment of the journal bearings is presented in this paper, where the basic theory for the misalignments and some results for the circular journal bearing are also presented to show the general trends of the misalignments.

Mixed-lubrication analysis of marine stern tube bearing considering bending deformation of stern shaft and cavitation

TL;DR: In this article, a mixed-lubrication model has been developed to study tribological characteristics of a marine stern tube bearing and the finite difference method is employed to obtain numerical solutions of the Reynolds equation using combined Newton-Raphson and iterative relaxation methods.

Contact of Nominally Flat Surfaces

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a new theory of elastic contact, which is more closely related to real surfaces than earlier theories, and showed how the contact deformation depends on the topography of the surface, and established the criterion for distinguishing surfaces which touch elastically from those which touch plastically.

A study of a journal bearing lubricated by fluids with couple stress considering the elasticity of the liner

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of finite journal bearings with a fluid with couple stresses taking into account the elastic deformation of the liner was investigated. And the effect of couple stresses on the bearing characteristics is significantly apparent.

Understanding the composition and low friction tribofilm formation/removal in boundary lubrication

TL;DR: In this article, the removal rate of low-friction tribofilms is studied using a distinctive testing procedure using a pin-on-reciprocating plate tribometer with lubricants comprising a combination of base oil (PAO6), zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) and molybdenum dialkyllithiocarbamate (MoDTC) additives.
