TLDR
In this paper, the transition moments and absorption resulting from the electric moment induced in one molecule of a pair by the field of the quadrupole moments of a neighbor with axial or near axial symmetry are derived.
Abstract
Expressions are derived for the transition moments and absorption resulting from the electric moment induced in one molecule of a pair by the field of the quadrupole moments of a neighbor with axial or near axial symmetry. Values of relevant matrix elements of squares and products of direction cosines are included. For axial polar molecules, the infrared absorption has a different frequency dependence than that by permanent dipoles, permitting separation of the effects. For asymmetric rotors with nearly axial inertial symmetry, the absorption transitions with ΔK=0 are associated with one of the two quadrupole moments and transitions with ΔK=±2 with the other, again permitting spectral resolution of the different contributions. These possibilities are analyzed in some detail for the polar molecules CH3F and CHF3 and for the asymmetric rotor C2H4.

Theory of fluids of non-axial quadrupolar molecules

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that for pure ethylene, the effective axial approximation gives accurate results for the third order free energy term A 3, and hence, the non-axial expressions correctly reproduce the free energy and pressure second virial coefficient.

Refractivity virial coefficients of C2H4 and C2H4–Ar mixtures

TL;DR: In this article, the average quadrupole moment of pure ethylene and five mixtures of ethylene-argon was determined at 303 K using a combination of the dielectric second virial coefficient (Be) and the refractivity second-virial coefficient(BR) which gives the contribution of the quadrupoles induced dipole effect (BOR =Be −BR) leading to the determination of the average Quadrupole moments of (3.33±0.16)×10−26 esu cm2 for pure C2H4 and

Dielectric and pressure virial coefficients of imperfect gases. VI. Analysis of results for CF3H and CFH3

TL;DR: The dielectric and pressure second virial coefficients of CF3H and CFH3 as measured by Sutter and Cole are reproduced to 5% by a model of pair interactions taking account of central forces, electrostatic interactions, and shape effects as discussed by the authors.

Theory of fluids of non-axial quadrupolar molecules: II. structural and spectroscopic properties

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived thermodynamic perturbation theory expressions for structural and spectroscopic properties for fluids of non-axial quadrupolar molecules, including the structure factor, dielectric second virial coefficient, mean squared torque, and collision induced absorption spectral moments.

Direct determination of the imperfect gas contribution to the refractive index of ethylene and a discussion of the quadrupole moment

TL;DR: In this article, the experimental value of the second refractivity virial coefficient of ethylene obtained directly is higher than the classically calculated theoretical value, and the quadrupole moment of the ethylene determined by combining the results of second dielectric virial coefficients and the second Refractivity Virial coefficient compares very favorably with the one derived from the microwave absorption and the value obtained directly by the method of induced birefringence.

Molecular multipole moments

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of available information on molecular quadrupole and higher moments is presented and a theorem is proved which shows that only one independent scalar quantity is required to determine a molecular electric multipole tensor of rank p for molecules with an n-fold axis of symmetry where p < n.
