Production of ADI by hot shake out—microstructure and mechanical properties

TLDR
In this paper, the authors investigated the production of ADI by direct austempering after hot shake out and found a procedure to obtain carbide free ductile iron in a permanent mold, to austemper the samples during the post solidification cooling stage, and to characterize the microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting ADI.
Abstract
The present study investigates the production of ADI by direct austempering after hot shake out. The aims of the study are to find a procedure to obtain carbide free ductile iron in a permanent mold, to austemper the samples during the post solidification cooling stage, and to characterize the microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting ADI.The requirements to obtain carbide free microstructures for the present experimental conditions were identified. The austempering thermal cycles were carried out after hot shake out by transferring the casting to a molten salt bath. The influence of the use of an intermediate temperature homogenization stage was also investigated. The microstructure and mechanical properties of hot shake out specimens, were compared to those corresponding to samples of the same heat, solidified and heat treated conventionally. The results show that coarser acicular structures are obtained after austempering during post solidification cooling, as a result of the difference...

Revealing and characterising solidification structure of ductile cast iron

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed analysis of old and new solidification models was made, and a new model was proposed, where each solidification unit is a grain of eutectic austenite that has a dendritic substructure and contains a very large number of graphite nodules.

Influence of the inoculation process, the chemical composition and the cooling rate, on the solidification macro and microstructure of ductile iron

TL;DR: The solidification structure of any casting has a marked influence on its final microstructure and properties as mentioned in this paper, and the correlation between solidification structures, micro-structure, and properties of a casting has been studied.

Revealing the solidification structure of nodular iron

TL;DR: The effectiveness of several metallographic techniques used to reveal the solidification structure of nodular iron has been evaluated by quantitative metallography as discussed by the authors, using a colour metallograph reagent.

Metallographic study of the eutectic solidification of gray, vermicular and nodular cast iron

TL;DR: In this paper, a colour map of the segregation pattern can be revealed as a consequence of the development of a film of varying thickness formed by the etchant at the sample surface, when the light incises on this film is revealed in bright colours broght out by double reflection and interference.
