TLDR
The results indicate that the primary problem with accrual is not the attitudes of patients, but rather that the loss of potential participants is the result of the unavailability of an appropriate clinical trial and the disqualification of large numbers of patients.
Abstract
Purpose: The objective of this study is to understand the attitudes of American adults toward participation in cancer clinical trials. Methods: A national probability sample of 1,000 adults aged 18 and older living in noninstitutional settings was interviewed by telephone by Harris Interactive during March and April 2000. One participant was selected from each household selected for the study. The resulting data were weighted to reflect the full adult population of the United States as reported in Current Population Reports. An Index of Participation in a Cancer Clinical Trial was computed, using a confirmatory factor analysis and converting the factor scores into a 0-to-100 scale. Results: Approximately 32% of American adults (64 million individuals) indicate that they would be very willing to participate in a cancer clinical trial if asked to do so. An additional 38% of adults (76 million individuals) scored in a range that indicates that they are inclined to participate in a cancer clinical trial if as...

Barriers to recruiting underrepresented populations to cancer clinical trials: a systematic review.

TL;DR: The results indicated that underrepresented populations face numerous barriers to participation in cancer‐related trials, and the available evidence had limitations in quality regarding representativeness, justification of study methods, the reliability and validity of data‐collection methods, potential for bias, and data analysis.

Systematic Review of Barriers to the Recruitment of Older Patients With Cancer Onto Clinical Trials

TL;DR: Specific clinical trials confined to older patients should be conducted to evaluate tumor biology, treatment tolerability, and the effect of comorbid conditions, and protocol designs need to stratify for age and be less restrictive with respect to exclusions on functional status,Comorbidity, and previous cancers, such that results are generalizable to Older patients.

Barriers to participation in clinical trials of cancer: a meta-analysis and systematic review of patient-reported factors

TL;DR: The identification of barriers to the participation in clinical trials should help trialists to develop strategies that will keep to a maximum participation and cooperation in cancer trials, while informing and protecting prospective participants adequately.

The Role of Clinical Trial Participation in Cancer Research: Barriers, Evidence, and Strategies

TL;DR: The nature of cancer clinical trial barriers is characterized, the specific case of adolescents with cancer is considered, and it is suggested that the low rate of trial enrollment in this age group strongly correlates with limited improvements in cancer population outcomes compared with other age groups.

Lisrel 8: Structural Equation Modeling With the Simplis Command Language

TL;DR: The SIMPLIS language shifts the focus away from the technical question "How to do it", so that researchers can concentrate on the question, "What does it all mean?"

Latent variable models: An introduction to factor, path, and structural analysis

TL;DR: This text provides an introduction to a growing area in the social and behavioural sciences - the modelling of systems in which one or more variables are hypothesized but not directly observed, and provides a conceptually unified treatment of moelling.

Underrepresentation of patients 65 years of age or older in cancer-treatment trials.

TL;DR: There is substantial under representation of patients 65 years of age or older in studies of treatment for cancer, and the reasons should be clarified, and policies adopted to correct this underrepresentation.

Prospective Evaluation of Cancer Clinical Trial Accrual Patterns: Identifying Potential Barriers to Enrollment

TL;DR: Barriers to cancer clinical trial accrual can be prospectively identified and addressed in the development and conduct of future studies, which may potentially lead to more robust clinical trials enrollment.
