In this paper, the feasibility of constructing waveguides and directional couplers is demonstrated experimentally, and some theoretical considerations referring to waveguiders are presented, but the feasibility is not discussed.
Abstract
In realising microwave-circuit functions using surface technology, the physical size of passive components using e.m. waves imposes a limitation. This letter investigates the application of acoustic waves to this case. The feasibility of constructing waveguides and directional couplers is demonstrated experimentally, and some theoretical considerations referring to waveguides are presented.

Surface elastic waves

TL;DR: In this article, the propagation of various elastic waves at the surfaces of solids is considered, followed by descriptions of the many ways which have been demonstrated for transduction between surface elastic waves and electromagnetic waves.

Acoustic surface waveguides - Analysis and assessment

TL;DR: In this article, the properties of acoustic surface waveguides are reviewed, with particular reference to topographic structures in which guiding is achieved by drastic deformation of the substrate surface, and a numerical technique, capable of computing efficiently and with high accuracy the mode spectrum of an anisotropic piezoelectric heterogeneous waveguide of arbitrary cross section, is described.

Theory and Design of the Surface Acoustic Wave Multistrip Coupler

TL;DR: In this paper, the multistrip coupler performs the function of a directional coupler for freely propagating surface acoustic waves on a piezoelectrically active substrate.

Microsound Surface Waveguides

TL;DR: In this paper, the theoretical and experimental progress on topographic guides for the development of surface wave microsound systems is reviewed, and some preliminary results on topographical guides are presented.

Some Problems in the Theory of Guided Microsonic Waves

TL;DR: In this article, the wave equation for elastic waves in an isotropic solid is solved generally in Cartesian and in circular cylindrical coordinates, and the solutions are applied in the study of a variety of guiding structures of circular and rectangular symmetry.

Active and passive phonon devices

TL;DR: The magnitude of the contribution that acoustic waves will make to microwave technology is not yet clear as discussed by the authors, however, the unique characteristics of low-loss electronically variable long delays, and the ability to amplify without transforming to electrical energy, promise that the contribution will be one of increasing importance.
