Abstract
An approach to design a digital fibre optic receiver is given. Various types of receivers designed so far are reviewed with emphasis on long wavelength systems and compared both from the design and performance points of view.

Multiplication noise in uniform avalanche diodes

TL;DR: In this article, the spectral density of the noise generated in a uniformly multiplying p-n junction can be derived for any distribution of injected carriers, and the analysis is limited to the white noise spectrum only, and to diodes having large potential drops across the multiplying region of the depletion layer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Receiver design for digital fiber optic communication systems, II

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that a proper front-end design incorporates a high-impedance preamplifier which tends to integrate the detector output, and this must be followed by proper equalization in the later stages of the linear channel.

Radiation losses in glass optical waveguides

TL;DR: In this article, a single-mode waveguide with radiation losses of about 7 dB/km was constructed, which is very close to the intrinsic material scattering loss, with total losses between 60 and 70dB/km, allowing the measurement of bending losses at radii of curvature of a few centimeters.
Book ChapterDOI

Receiver design for optical fiber communication systems

TL;DR: The purpose of this chapter is to provide the reader with a basic understanding of the optical receiver and the interplay between the components of the receiver as well as the influence of the source and transmission medium.
