Renewables for sustainable village power supply

Abstract
In Mexico there are more than 80000 villages without electricity whatsoever. People living in these communities could reach 6 million inhabitants. The smallness and remoteness of these communities makes them eligible for decentralised remote power technologies such as photovoltaics (PV), thermosolar, wind, micro hydro and biomass. These technological applications may demonstrate the technical performance, economic competitiveness, operational viability and environmental benefits of a better solution for electrification of rural areas compared to conventional options such as grid extension or isolated diesel gensets mini grids. The paper discusses solar power, geothermal power, bioenergy, wind energy and micro hydro power in Mexico for rural communities.
