With improvement of hygiene, the risk of louse-borne rickettsiosis (epidemic typhus) is low in Europe, Nevertheless, recrudescent form of Rickettsia prowazekii infection persists and there could be an epidemic typhus outbreak if a body lice epidemic occurs under unfavorable sanitary conditions.
