Rigorous graphical targeting for resource conservation via material recycle/reuse networks

TLDR
This paper presents a rigorous graphical targeting approach to minimize the use of fresh resources by using segregation, mixing, and direct recycle/reuse strategies.
Abstract
Material recycle/reuse is one of the key strategies in reducing the consumption of fresh resources in the process industries. Over the past decade, several techniques have been developed to reduce the consumption of specific material utilities such as water and hydrogen. To date, none of the published techniques provides a noniterative, systematic, and graphical technique for identifying a target for minimum usage of the fresh resources ahead of detailed design of the recycle/reuse network. In this paper, we present a rigorous graphical targeting approach to minimize the use of fresh resources by using segregation, mixing, and direct recycle/reuse strategies. First, the problem is formulated mathematically to provide a systematic basis for its solution. Then, dynamic programming techniques are employed to derive the mathematical conditions and characteristics of an optimal solution strategy. These conditions and characteristics are transformed into a graphical form that can be readily used to identify rig...

Pinch analysis approach to carbon-constrained energy sector planning

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a new application of pinch analysis for a scenario where energy sector planning takes place with carbon emission constraints arising from an effort to reduce climate change effects, where the minimum amount of zero-carbon energy resource required to achieve the overall emissions target for a country or region, given that the amount of fossil energy resources available are already known.

Optimal design and planning of sustainable chemical supply chains under uncertainty

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors address the design of sustainable chemical supply chains in the presence of uncertainty in the life cycle inventory associated with the network operation, where the design task is mathematically formulated as a bi-criterion stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) that simultaneously accounts for the maximization of the net present value and the minimization of environmental impact for a given probability level.

Make your process water pay for itself

TL;DR: In this paper, two basic strategies for reducing water demand in a chemical-process plant were discussed. One strategy consists of modifying individual process and utility units to reduce their inherent need for water.

On the optimality conditions of water utilization systems in process plants with single contaminants

TL;DR: In this paper, necessary conditions of optimality for water-using networks in refineries and process plants are introduced, which correspond to the optimal water allocation planning problem that considers wastewater reuse on the basis of a single contaminant.
