Roles of texture in controlling oxidation, hydrogen ingress and hydride formation in Zr alloys

TLDR
In this article, the texture and grain-boundary characteristics of oxide are dependent on the texture of metal substrate, and intrinsic factors affecting the oxide microstructure are presented. And a thermodynamic model is developed to analyze the nucleation and the stress-induced reorientation of intergranular hydrides.

The microstructure and microtexture of zirconium oxide films studied by transmission electron backscatter diffraction and automated crystal orientation mapping with transmission electron microscopy

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed characterization of nanostructured thin zirconium oxide films formed during aqueous corrosion of a nuclear-grade ZrConium alloy (Zircaloy-4) has been carried out by means of two novel, ultra-high-spatial-resolution grain mapping techniques, namely automated crystal orientation mapping in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and transmission electron backscatter diffraction (t-EBSD).

The effect of Sn concentration on oxide texture and microstructure formation in zirconium alloys

TL;DR: In this article, the development of oxide texture and microstructure formed on two zirconium alloys with differing Sn contents (Zr-1Nb-1Sn-0.1Fe) has been investigated using transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD) in the scanning electron microscope and automated crystal orientation mapping in the transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Microstructure and texture analysis of δ-hydride precipitation in Zircaloy-4 materials by electron microscopy and neutron diffraction

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed microstructure and texture study of various hydrided Zircaloy-4 materials by neutron diffraction and microscopy is presented, and it is shown that the precipitated δ-ZrH1.66 generally follows the δ(111)//α(0001) and δ[1{\overline 1}0]//α[11{overline 2} 0] orientation relationship with the α −Zr matrix, which contributes to the accommodation of the substantial misfit strains associated with hydride precipitation in

Investigation of mechanical and microstructural properties of Zircaloy-4 under different experimental conditions

TL;DR: In this article, two types of Zircaloy-4 (alpha-annealed and beta-quenched) were investigated in their different forms, and it was found that mechanical properties of these two types are affected significantly by welding and hydrogen-charging followed by neutron irradiation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Grain size effect on the thermally activated twin boundary migration in a zirconium alloy

TL;DR: In this article, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was used to investigate the effect of the initial grain size on the evolution of the tensile twins in the fine-grained sample and coarse grained sample.

Crystallography of Zirconium Hydrides in Recrystallized Zircaloy-2 Fuel Cladding by Electron Backscatter Diffraction

TL;DR: In this paper, the delta-phase Zr hydrides were examined by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and the most common crystallographic relationship for both types of the hyddrides precipitated at the inter- and intra-granular sites was identical at (0001)(alpha) // {111}(delta), with {1017}(alpha) and { 111} (delta) being the occasional exception only for the intergranular radial hydride.

Intergranular δ-hydride nucleation and orientation in zirconium alloys

TL;DR: In this article, a thermodynamic model is developed to analyze the nucleation and orientation of intergranular δ-hydrides, and the results show that the grain boundary structure and zirconium grain orientation simultaneously govern hydride precipitation.

Effect of radial hydrides on the axial and hoop mechanical properties of Zircaloy-4 cladding

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of radial hydrides on the mechanical properties of stress-relief annealed Zircaloy-4 cladding was studied and a reference hydrogen concentration was defined for assessing the fuel cladding integrity based on a criterion of the tensile strength 600 MPa.
