Pattern of habitat use by Peromyscus spp.Abstract:
Post-dispersal seed predation by rodents represents a potentially important element of biotic resistance to plant invasion. Selection for five different types of seeds by granivorous rodents was studied in maple-beech forests, old fields and conifer plantations in Madison County, New York. Rodents visited dishes containing equal masses of seeds of the native Cornus amomum and Rubus idaeus, and the non-native Lonicera morrowii, Rhamnus cathartica and Rosa multiflora. Greater masses of C. amomum and R. idaeus seeds were consumed during a night of mammal visitation than of the three non-native species, and pattern of selection did not differ among habitats. Rodents encountered seed dishes sooner in forested habitats than old fields. The primary seed predators in our region, Peromyscus spp., were more common at forests and plantations than old fields. Patterns of habitat use by Peromyscus spp. may aid in resisting invasion of intact forests by invasive plants; however, selection of native over non-na...read more

Seed size and provenance mediate the joint effects of disturbance and seed predation on community assembly
TL;DR: Interestingly, in situ community filters have differential effects on native versus exotic species, suggesting that processes that limit native recruitment may not have the same inhibitory influence on exotics.

Biotic resistance via granivory: establishment by invasive, naturalized, and native asters reflects generalist preference
TL;DR: It is suggested that generalist granivores can be an important biological filter in plant communities and that species-specific seed attributes that determine seed predation may help to explain variation in native plant recruitment and the success of exotic species invasions.

Incorporating the effects of generalist seed predators into plant community theory
TL;DR: It is argued that seed predation by generalist consumers, which is pervasive in temperate communities, should be better incorporated into plant community theory and Experiments that specifically incorporate the presence and attributes of the seed predator community and that follow seed fate would fill important knowledge gaps.

Biotic resistance: exclusion of native rodent consumers releases populations of a weak invader
TL;DR: These findings illustrate how biotic resistance from granivory and florivory of native generalist rodents can provide an important ecosystem service by strongly limiting the local abundance of a widely distributed exotic weed.

TL;DR: In central Argentina’s Caldenal savannas, experimentally examined how seed predation and water availability influenced recruitment/establishment of nine exotic plant invaders over 2 years and explored how seedpredation patterns related to invasion patterns.

Effects of rodents on survival of tree seeds and seedlings invading old fields
TL;DR: It is concluded that both of these common small mammal species can have pro- found effects on survival of tree propagules near forest-field edges, but that their effects are strongly dependent on density.

The effects of herbivory and granivory on terrestrial plant succession
TL;DR: A literature survey of experimental and observational tests of the effects of above-ground, native herbivores on terrestrial plant succession reveals a more complex pattern than anticipated from earlier reviews on this subject as mentioned in this paper.

TL;DR: The lower survivorship under herbs was largely the result of seed and seedling predation, which were the two most important processes regulating tree and shrub colonization of old fields in this study.

TL;DR: A comparison of exotic plant species that are highly invasive in North America with exotics that are widespread, but non-invasive revealed that the invasive plants were more likely to have potent secondary compounds that have not been reported from North American native plants.
