Sexual Power and HIV Risk, South Africa

TLDR
Among a sample of young women, limited sexual power was associated with inconsistent condom use but not directly with HIV.
Abstract
Gender power inequities are believed to play a key role in the HIV epidemic through their effects on women's power in sexual relationships. We hypothesized that lack of sexual power, measured with a four-point relationship control scale and by a woman's experience of forced sex with her most recent partner, would decrease the likelihood of consistent condom use and increase the risk for HIV infection among sexually experienced, 15- to 24-year-old women in South Africa. While limited sexual power was not directly associated with HIV, it was associated with inconsistent condom use: women with low relationship control were 2.10 times more likely to use condoms inconsistently (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-3.78), and women experiencing forced sex were 5.77 times more likely to use condoms inconsistently (95% CI 1.86-17.91). Inconsistent condom use was, in turn, significantly associated with HIV infection (adjusted odds ratio 1.58, 95% CI 1.10-2.27).

Diagnosis and Disclosure of HIV Status: Implications for Women's Risk of Physical Partner Violence in the Postpartum Period.

TL;DR: An elevated risk of IPV is found among the HIV-positive women who chose not to disclose their status to their partner, and nondisclosure is likely a marker for other problematic aspects of the relationship.

Alcohol Use and Transactional Sex among Women in South Africa: Results from a Nationally Representative Survey

TL;DR: Alcohol dependency and binge drinking are significantly associated with transactional sex in South African women and HIV prevention programmes need to target these women, and address both their alcohol use, as well as the HIV risks associated withtransactional sex.

Microbicides, sexuality and sexual health in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Mitzy Gafos
TL;DR: Examining whether vaginal microbicides are compatible with socio-cultural norms regarding sexuality and sexual health in a predominantly rural area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa found that microbicide acceptability is evaluated from a cultural perspective, but they may be less compatible with norms relating to intravaginal cleansing and love medicines.

Predictors of Relationship Power Among Drug-Involved Women

The influence of relationship power dynamics on HIV testing in rural Malawi.

TL;DR: The results indicate that young Malawians are testing for HIV at relatively high rates, repeatedly, and not just during pregnancy, and highlight that testing decisions are deeply embedded within the relationship context, which should be considered in future HIV testing interventions.

Gender-based violence, relationship power, and risk of HIV infection in women attending antenatal clinics in South Africa

Measuring Sexual Relationship Power in HIV/STD Research

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduced a theoretically based and validated measure of relationship power dynamics, the Sexual Relationship Power Scale (SRPS), which was administered to a census of women (N = 388) at a community health clinic.
