The properties of a unique set of quantum states of the electromagnetic field are reviewed in this article, and proposed schemes for the generation and detection of squeezed states as well as potential applications are discussed.
Abstract
The properties of a unique set of quantum states of the electromagnetic field are reviewed. These ‘squeezed states’ have less uncertainty in one quadrature than a coherent state. Proposed schemes for the generation and detection of squeezed states as well as potential applications are discussed.

Quantum sensing

Abstract: "Quantum sensing" describes the use of a quantum system, quantum properties or quantum phenomena to perform a measurement of a physical quantity Historical examples of quantum sensors include magnetometers based on superconducting quantum interference devices and atomic vapors, or atomic clocks More recently, quantum sensing has become a distinct and rapidly growing branch of research within the area of quantum science and technology, with the most common platforms being spin qubits, trapped ions and flux qubits The field is expected to provide new opportunities - especially with regard to high sensitivity and precision - in applied physics and other areas of science In this review, we provide an introduction to the basic principles, methods and concepts of quantum sensing from the viewpoint of the interested experimentalist

Introductory quantum optics

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an elementary introduction to the subject of quantum optics, the study of the quantum mechanical nature of light and its interaction with matter, and present a presentation almost entirely concerned with the quantized electromagnetic field.
Journal ArticleDOI

Coherent states: Theory and some Applications

TL;DR: In this article, a general algorithm for constructing coherent states of dynamical groups for a given quantum physical system is presented, and the result is that the coherent states are isomorphic to a coset space of group geometrical space.

Quantum Brownian motion: The functional integral approach

TL;DR: In this paper, the quantum mechanical dynamics of a particle coupled to a heat bath is treated by functional integral methods and a generalization of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional is derived.
Journal ArticleDOI

Quantum metrology with nonclassical states of atomic ensembles

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review and illustrate the theory and experiments with atomic ensembles that have demonstrated many-particle entanglement and quantum-enhanced metrology.

Coherent and incoherent states of the radiation field

TL;DR: In this article, the photon statistics of arbitrary fields in fully quantum-mechanical terms are discussed, and a general method of representing the density operator for the field is discussed as well as a simple formulation of a superposition law for photon fields.

Quantum Mechanical Noise in an Interferometer

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a new technique, the squeezed-state technique, that allows one to decrease the photon-counting error while increasing the radiation pressure error, or vice versa.

Two-photon coherent states of the radiation field

TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of two-photon coherent states is introduced for applications in quantum optics, which is a simple generalization of the well-known minimum-uncertainty wave packets.

On the measurement of a weak classical force coupled to a quantum mechanical oscillator. i. issues of principle

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors considered a new type of quantum nondemolition measurement called back-action-evading measurement, where the real part of the harmonic oscillator's complex amplitude is measured by a single transducer.
