TLDR
In this paper, a hands-on laboratory course is presented to examine the human skeleton as a dynamic, living system, with a review of normal and abnormal variations of each bone and apply this knowledge to make determinations about age, sex, stature and pathological conditions.
Abstract
Course Description and Goals: In this hands-on laboratory course, we will take an in-depth study of the human skeleton as a dynamic, living system. We will examine each bone, with a review of normal and abnormal variations. In the course of this examination, we will cover bone biology, growth and development, and anatomy. You will learn how to record osteological observations and apply this knowledge to make determinations about age, sex, stature, and pathological conditions. We will also discuss how these data are used in the anthropological interpretation of historic and prehistoric patterns of health, disease, stress, and trauma, as well as discuss ethical considerations in studying human remains. Much of the course will be based on handling real human bones, so be prepared (and be gentle with material)!

A new small bodied hominin from the Late Pleistocene of Flores, Indonesia

TL;DR: The discovery of an adult hominin with stature and endocranial volume equal to the smallest-known australopithecines is reported, from the Late Pleistocene of Flores, Indonesia, and shows that the genus Homo is morphologically more varied and flexible in its adaptive responses than previously thought.

Age Estimation from the Auricular Surface of the Ilium: A Revised Method

TL;DR: A revised method for estimating adult age at death using the auricular surface of the ilium, which has a slightly higher correlation with age than do the Suchey-Brooks pubic symphysis stages.

The problem of aging human remains and living individuals: a review.

TL;DR: This review aims at exposing the experience of the authors working in the FASE subsection of IALM (International Academy of Legal Medicine) in the field of age estimation both on the dead and the living, at highlighting advantages and limits of each method, and suggesting practical solutions concerning the age estimation process for adults and subadults, dead and living, and pedopornographic material.

Explaining sex differences in dental caries prevalence: saliva, hormones, and "life-history" etiologies.

TL;DR: The results suggest that hormonal fluctuations can have a dramatic effect on the oral health of women, and constitute an important causal factor in explaining sex differences in caries rates.

Human adaptations for the visual assessment of strength and fighting ability from the body and face

TL;DR: Tests support the hypothesis that the human cognitive architecture includes mechanisms that assess fighting ability—mechanisms that focus on correlates of upper-body strength, and are the first empirical demonstration that, for humans, judgements of strength and judgement of fighting ability not only track each other, but accurately track actual upper- body strength.
