In this paper, the sources of nitrous acid and nitric acid in air in the parts-per-billion concentration range are provided by means of room-temperature oxalic acid sublimation onto solid sodium nitrite and potassium nitrate, respectively.
Abstract
Sources of nitrous acid and nitric acid in air in the parts-per-billion concentration range are provided by means of room-temperature oxalic acid sublimation onto solid sodium nitrite and potassium nitrate, respectively. Nitrogen dioxide is not present and nitric oxide is present only at a small percentage in the nitrous acid source at relative humidities in the 30-60% range. The presence of nitrous acid is verified by spectroscopic and chemical reaction studies. Nitric oxide, hydrogen cyanide, and other compounds can be similarly produced with appropriate target compounds. Nitrogen dioxide from permeation devices must be used in plastic systems to minimize impurities.

Annular denuder method for sampling reactive gases and aerosols in the atmosphere

TL;DR: The annular denuder method (ADM) as discussed by the authors was developed to measure several gaseous and aerosol species without sampling artifacts, and it has been applied to the determination of gas phase and particulate matter.

Criteria for the choice of a denuder sampling technique devoted to the measurement of atmospheric nirous and nitric acids

TL;DR: In this paper, the criteria for the choice of the most appropriate denuder coating and set-up devoted to the measurement of atmospheric gaseous species are discussed and applied to the problem of nitrous and nitric acid determination in real conditions.

Continuous generation system for low-concentration gaseous nitrous acid

TL;DR: A flow type generation system based on the reaction of sodium nitrite solution with sulfuric acid has been developed for parts per billion levels of nitrous acid as mentioned in this paper, where reagent solutions are continuously pumped into a reaction vessel and drawn off to waste.

TL;DR: In this article, a 6.0-cm magic-angle spinning (MAS) device was proposed for single-pulse (SP) and cross-polarization (CP) analyses with {sup 13}C, {sup 15}N, and {sup 29}Si at 4.7 T.

The ultraviolet absorption spectrum of nitrous acid in the vapor state

TL;DR: The diffuse absorption bands of HON14O, HON16O, DON16O and DON15O in the near ultraviolet have been examined in this article, where the authors attributed the weakening of the internal hydrogen bond in the cis state upon an electronic promotion of primarily nO→π* type.
