Sustainability analysis of innovative technologies for the rare earth elements recovery
Alessia Amato,Alessandro Becci,Ionela Birloaga,I. De Michelis,Francesco Ferella,Valentina Innocenzi,Nicolò Maria Ippolito,Francesco Vegliò,Francesca Beolchini +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors classified rare earth elements (REEs) as critical raw materials for Europe for their economic relevance and the supply risk, and evaluated three processes, one for each mentioned waste, to assess both the environmental and the economic aspects.
Journal ArticleDOI
The environmental impacts of preparation for reuse: A case study of WEEE reuse in Germany
TL;DR: The results show that a reuse of products with an European energy efficiency rating of D and C is not recommended for any of the analyzed products, and reuse leads to significant saving potentials in almost all impact categories.

Repair vs. replacement: Selection of the best end-of-life scenario for small household electric and electronic equipment based on life cycle assessment.
TL;DR: The results indicate that for all the analysed categories, the repair & reuse scenarios generally prove environmentally better than replacement scenarios, as Directive 2012/19/EU promotes, however, for some types of failure, e.g. those related to motors or printed circuit boards, if the failure occurs at the end of its life span, replacement is a better option than Repair & reuse.

Does increased circularity lead to environmental sustainability?: The case of washing machine reuse in Germany
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated under which circumstances increases in circularity through the reuse of use-phase-intensive electrical and electronic equipment lead to environmental benefits and showed that even high reuse rates only have limited leverage on reducing environmental impacts and that it is therefore necessary to include detailed environmental assessments in a holistic evaluation of circular economy activities.

Environmental impact assessment of R-152a as a drop-in replacement of R-134a in a domestic refrigerator
TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive environmental analysis of the drop-in substitution of R-134 with a low GWP refrigerant (R-152a) in a no-frost domestic refrigerator was performed.

Energy efficiency and consumption — the rebound effect — a survey
TL;DR: In this paper, a review of some of the relevant literature from the US offers definitions and identifies sources including direct, secondary, and economy-wide sources and concludes that the range of estimates for the size of the rebound effect is very low to moderate.

Circular economy rebound
Trevor Zink,Roland Geyer +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that circular economy activities can increase overall production, which can partially or fully offset their benefits, and they have termed this effect "circular economy rebound".

Products that go round: exploring product life extension through design
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored a range of product life extension strategies and concluded that tailored approaches are needed to determine when to apply which product life-extension strategy and how to apply them.

Consequential life cycle assessment: a review
J. Mason Earles,Anthony Halog +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, consequential life cycle assessment (CLCA) has emerged as a modeling approach for capturing environmental impacts of product systems beyond physical relationships accounted for in attributional LCA (ALCA).
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimal household refrigerator replacement policy for life cycle energy, greenhouse gas emissions, and cost
TL;DR: In this paper, the optimal lifetimes of mid-sized refrigerator models in the US, using a life cycle optimization model based on dynamic programming, were discussed, and model runs were conducted to find the optimal lifetime that minimize energy, global warming potential (GWP), and cost objectives over a time horizon between 1985 and 2020.
