This paper develops a new theoretical model with which to examine the interaction between technology and organizations. Early research studies assumed technology to be an objective, external force that would have deterministic impacts on organizational properties such as structure. Later researchers focused on the human aspect of technology, seeing it as the outcome of strategic choice and social action. This paper suggests that either view is incomplete, and proposes a reconceptualization of technology that takes both perspectives into account. A theoretical model—the structurational model of technology—is built on the basis of this new conceptualization, and its workings explored through discussion of a field study of information technology. The paper suggests that the reformulation of the technology concept and the structurational model of technology allow a deeper and more dialectical understanding of the interaction between technology and organizations. This understanding provides insight into the li...read more

Technology as an operant resource in service (eco)systems
TL;DR: It is argued that the consideration of technology as an operant resource in service (eco)systems provides a more encompassing view for systematically studying the way in which technologies are integrated as resources, value is collaboratively created, and service is innovated.

Artifacts at the centre of routines: performing the material turn in routines theory
TL;DR: In this paper, a novel and deeper conceptualisation of artifacts and materiality is proposed to improve the understanding of the influence of artifacts on routines dynamics by drawing from recent advances in Routines and STS/Performativity Theory.

User satisfaction with computer-mediated communication systems

The Performativity of Routines: Theorising the Influence of Artefacts and Distributed Agencies on Routines Dynamics
TL;DR: The authors proposed a theoretical framework that characterises the mutual adaptation between formal routines and rules, on one hand, and actual performances, on the other, as iterative cycles of framing, overflowing and reframing of knowledge inputs and actions.

Collaborating on Multiparty Information Systems Development Projects: A Collective Reflection-in-Action View
TL;DR: In this paper, a longitudinal qualitative field study of a Web-based application development project was undertaken to develop an in-depth understanding of the collaborative practices that unfold among diverse professionals on ISD projects.

Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, and User
TL;DR: Regression analyses suggest that perceived ease of use may actually be a causal antecdent to perceived usefulness, as opposed to a parallel, direct determinant of system usage.

Perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and user acceptance of information technology
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed and validated new scales for two specific variables, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, which are hypothesized to be fundamental determinants of user acceptance.

Alan Sica,Anthony Giddens +1 more
TL;DR: Giddens as mentioned in this paper has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade and outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form.
