This paper develops a new theoretical model with which to examine the interaction between technology and organizations. Early research studies assumed technology to be an objective, external force that would have deterministic impacts on organizational properties such as structure. Later researchers focused on the human aspect of technology, seeing it as the outcome of strategic choice and social action. This paper suggests that either view is incomplete, and proposes a reconceptualization of technology that takes both perspectives into account. A theoretical model—the structurational model of technology—is built on the basis of this new conceptualization, and its workings explored through discussion of a field study of information technology. The paper suggests that the reformulation of the technology concept and the structurational model of technology allow a deeper and more dialectical understanding of the interaction between technology and organizations. This understanding provides insight into the li...read more

Chatter on the red: what hazards threat reveals about the social life of microblogged information
TL;DR: This paper considers a subset of the computer-mediated communication that took place during the flooding of the Red River Valley in the US and Canada in March and April 2009, focusing on the use of Twitter, a microblogging service, to identify mechanisms of information production, distribution, and organization.

Designing routines: On the folly of designing artifacts, while hoping for patterns of action
TL;DR: It is argued that artifact-centered assumptions about design are not well suited to designing organizational routines, which are generative systems that produce recognizable, repetitive patterns of interdependent actions, carried out by multiple actors.

Integrated information environment or matrix of control?: the contradictory implications of information technology
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the extent to which information technology deployed in work processes facilitates changes in forms of control and forms of organizing and found that when information technology mediates work processes, it creates an information environment, which while it may facilitate integrated and flexible operations, may also enable a disciplinary matrix of knowledge and power.

How virtual are we? Measuring Virtuality and Understanding Its Impact in a Global Organization
TL;DR: A virtuality index is proposed to assess how ‘virtual’ a given setting is and their effect on perceived team performance, using the concept of discontinuities, or changes in expected conditions.

Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, and User
TL;DR: Regression analyses suggest that perceived ease of use may actually be a causal antecdent to perceived usefulness, as opposed to a parallel, direct determinant of system usage.

Locating the 17th Book of Giddens@@@The Constitution of Society: Outline of the Theory of Structuration.
Alan Sica,Anthony Giddens +1 more
TL;DR: Giddens as mentioned in this paper has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade and outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form.
