We investigate the radial column density distribution in a sample of 9 galaxies taken from the THINGS survey. The HI data have been used to probe the extent of the neutral (atomic) gas disks down to column densities of less than 0.1 ℳ ⊙ pc −2 . The size of the disks might be set simply by the amount of available gas that has contributed to the formation of the galaxy or truncated by ionisation by the extragalactic radiation field once the HI column density has dropped below a certain threshold.read more

Numerical modelling of Auriga’s Wheel – a new ring galaxy
TL;DR: In this paper, the formation of a collisional ring galaxy was studied using N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics modeling, and it was shown that the velocity of expansion of the ring is sensitive to the mass of the elliptical, while insensitive to the encounter velocity.

Things:the hi nearby galaxy survey
Fabian Walter,Elias Brinks,W. J. G. de Blok,Frank Bigiel,Robert C. Kennicutt,Michele D. Thornley,Adam Leroy +6 more
TL;DR: The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS) as discussed by the authors is a high spectral (≤52kms −1 ) and spatial (∼ 6 ′′ ) resolution survey of HI emission in 34 nearby galaxies obtained using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA).

The Escape of Ionizing Photons from the Galaxy
TL;DR: The Magellanic Stream and several high-velocity clouds have now been detected in optical line emission as mentioned in this paper, which is most plausibly explained by photoionization due to hot, young stars in the Galactic disk.

Photoionization of the Diffuse Interstellar Medium and Galactic Halo by OB Associations

TL;DR: In this article, the geometry of diffuse II regions due to OB associations in the Galactic plane has been calculated, and the authors provided analytic formulae for the Lyc escape fraction as functions of the S(sub 0) O-star catalog of Garmany and a new Lyc stellar stellar stellar flux calibration.

Photoionization of disk galaxies: An explanation of the sharp edges in the H I distribution
James B. Dove,J. Michael Shull +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reproduce the observed radial truncation of the H I distribution in isolated spiral galaxies with a model in which extragalactic radiation photoionizes the gaseous disk.

H I mapping of outer disks of galaxies - M33 and NGC 3344
TL;DR: The neutral hydrogen emission of M33 and NGC 3344 has been mapped using the Arecibo telescope as mentioned in this paper, showing that the H I disk extends out to twice the optical radius.
