TLDR
The authors exploit newly available massive natu- ral language corpora to capture the language as a language evolution phenomenon. But their work is limited to a subset of the languages in the corpus.About:

The sound of size revisited - New insights from a German-Hungarian comparative study on sound symbolism
TL;DR: This article used cross-random effect models to investigate the effect of lip rounding and vowel backness on sound symbolic effects in German and Hungarian, languages with both rounded and unrounded high front vowels as well as/o/, and found that lip rounding increases size.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probing recursion
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyse three case studies from the literature and argue that they tell us little about the underlying mental processes at play within each of these domains: (a) whether experimental participants employ recursive rules in parsing artificial strings of nonsense syllables; (b) the role of self-embedded structures in reasoning and general cognition; and (c) the reputed connection between structural features of a given object and the corresponding, recursive rules needed to represent/generate it.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cognitive phylogenies, the Darwinian logic of descent, and the inadequacy of cladistic thinking
TL;DR: It is argued that if the authors are to conceive of cognitive mechanisms in a multi-dimensional, bottom-up perspective, in accordance with the Darwinian logic of descent, they should rather focus on decomposing these mechanisms into lower-level, generic functions, which have the additional advantage of being implementable in neural matter, which ultimately produces cognition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deacon’s Challenge: From Calls to Words
TL;DR: In this article, an incremental model of the call-to-word transition is presented for the special case of words, embedded in a general conception of human social evolution with independent empirical support, but it also depends on some specific assumptions about language and about the earlier forms of hominin communication.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biolinguistics and the human language faculty
TL;DR: In this article, a discussion piece provides a high-level characterization of biolinguistics and highlights the main articulation of this research program and points to recent studies linking language and biology.

The Evolution of Cooperation
TL;DR: In this paper, a model based on the concept of an evolutionarily stable strategy in the context of the Prisoner's Dilemma game was developed for cooperation in organisms, and the results of a computer tournament showed how cooperation based on reciprocity can get started in an asocial world, can thrive while interacting with a wide range of other strategies, and can resist invasion once fully established.

The magical number seven plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information
TL;DR: The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating the authors' stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of their subjects, and the concepts and measures provided by the theory provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neural networks and physical systems with emergent collective computational abilities
TL;DR: A model of a system having a large number of simple equivalent components, based on aspects of neurobiology but readily adapted to integrated circuits, produces a content-addressable memory which correctly yields an entire memory from any subpart of sufficient size.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deterministic nonperiodic flow
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that nonperiodic solutions are ordinarily unstable with respect to small modifications, so that slightly differing initial states can evolve into considerably different states, and systems with bounded solutions are shown to possess bounded numerical solutions.

The mathematical theory of communication
Claude E. Shannon,Warren Weaver +1 more
TL;DR: The Mathematical Theory of Communication (MTOC) as discussed by the authors was originally published as a paper on communication theory more than fifty years ago and has since gone through four hardcover and sixteen paperback printings.
