TLDR
The solution of the structure of the photosynthetic reaction center from the bacterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis is described, and the structure is correlated with its function as a light-driven electron pump across the Photosynthetic membrane.Abstract:
The history and methods of membrane protein crystallization are described. The solution of the structure of the photosynthetic reaction center from the bacterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis is described, and the structure of this membrane protein complex is correlated with its function as a light-driven electron pump across the photosynthetic membrane. Conclusions about the structure of the photosystem II reaction center from plants are drawn, and aspects of membrane protein structure are discussed.read more

Crystal structures explain functional properties of two E. coli porins
S. W. Cowan,Tilman Schirmer,Gabriele Rummel,Matthias Steiert,Robin Ghosh,Richard A. Pauptit,Johan N. Jansonius,Jurg P. Rosenbusch +7 more
TL;DR: The crystal structures of matrix porin and phosphoporin both reveal trimers of identical subunits, each subunit consisting of a 16-stranded anti-parallel β-barrel containing a pore.

Carotenoids in Photosynthesis
TL;DR: Evidence is presented as to how the carotenoids are organized within both portions of the photosynthetic unit (the light harvesting antenna and the reaction centre) and how they discharge both their functions.

Lipidic cubic phases: a novel concept for the crystallization of membrane proteins.
TL;DR: Bacteriorhodopsin crystals were obtained from bicontinuous cubic phases, but not from micellar systems, implying a critical role of the continuity of the diffusion space (the bilayer) on crystal growth.

Structure of the protein subunits in the photosynthetic reaction centre of Rhodopseudomonas viridis at 3Å resolution
TL;DR: The molecular structure of the photosynthetic reaction centre from Rhodopseudomonas viridis has been elucidated using X-ray crystallographic analysis and the first description of the high-resolution structure of an integral membrane protein is presented.

Rhodopsin-like Protein from the Purple Membrane of Halobacterium halobium
TL;DR: It is shown that the purple colour is due to retinal bound to an opsin-like protein, the only protein present in this membrane fragment, which has been isolated in relatively pure form from Halobacterium halobium.

A graphics model building and refinement system for macromolecules
TL;DR: A model building and refinement system is described for use with a Vector General 3400 display that has been used to assist in difference Fourier map interpretation at medium and high resolution, and to build a protein molecule into a multiple isomorphous replacement phased electron density map.
