The control of a free-piston engine generator. Part 2: Engine dynamics and piston motion control
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the response of a free-pistil engine to rapid load changes using decentralised PID, PDF and disturbance feedforward, and found that the engine is sensitive to rapid loads but that in constant power applications standard control techniques provide satisfactory performance.
