The use of chromium reduction in the analysis of reduced inorganic sulfur in sediments and shales

TLDR
In this article, a chromium reduction method was used for the determination of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds (pyrite + elemental sulfur + acid volatile monosulfides) in modern sediments and shales.
About

Movement and transformation of(35)S-labelled sulphate in the soil of a heavily polluted site in the Northern Czech Republic.

TL;DR: An increase in FeS2−35S with time indicated anaerobic conditions suitable for bacterial sulphate reduction, and the turnover time of C-bonded35S was shorter than that of ester sulphate35S.

Aqueous and mineral intrinsic bioremediation assessment: Natural attenuation

TL;DR: In this article, an approach to evaluate intrinsic bioremediation, aqueous and mineral intrinsic biodegradation assessment (AMIBA), is described. AMIBA is based on the microbial reduction of Fe\U3+N and SO\U2-\N\D4\N, forming reduced Fe and S mineral species in amounts stoichiometrically equivalent to the contaminant mass oxidized by microbial processes.

Effects of a reactive barrier and aquifer geology on metal distribution and mobility in a mine drainage impacted aquifer.

TL;DR: A series of selective extraction procedures was applied to cores of aquifer sediment, to ascertain the distribution of metals among various solid phases present in the aquifer, and to assess the potential mobility of metals under changing geochemical conditions.

Diagenesis of mudrocks, illite 'crystallinity' and the effects on engineering properties.

TL;DR: In this paper, a suite of 41 mudrock samples ranging from Cambrian slates to Carboniferous coal measures in age and variable diagenetic rank has been sampled and tested.

The Sulfur Cycle

TL;DR: The authors' model of the sulfur cycle can draw some conclusions that man is now contributing about one half as much as nature to the total atmospheric burden of sulfur compounds, but by A.D. 2000 he will be contributing about as much, and in the Northern Hemisphere alone he is more than matching nature.

Pyrite: Its Rapid Formation in a Salt Marsh and Its Importance In Ecosystem Metabolism

TL;DR: Pyrite formation in salt-marsh peat occurs more rapidly than is generally thought for any natural system, and the rates of sulfate reduction and ecosystem respiration may be grossly underestimated.

Rock and mineral analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an up-to-date treatment of the problems associated with the analysis of geological materials, including the requesite steps from selection of the sample and choice of elements to the facilities needed, preparation of sample, methods for the determination of individual constituens and reporting of the results of the analysis.
