The use of virtual reality in environment experiences and the importance of realism

TLDR
In this article, the authors examined how realism of environmental presentations impact affective responses and participant perceptions and found that more realistic VR environments evoked more positive affective and serenity responses, as well as a greater sense of presence.

Learning effectiveness of 3D virtual reality in hospitality training: a situated cognitive perspective

TL;DR: In this article , the authors adopt situated cognition theory to empirically test the effect of the awareness of contextual variables (social interaction, location and task) on learning and compare learning outcomes between tourism training in VR and real-world experimental settings.

Semantic Riverscapes: Perception and evaluation of linear landscapes from oblique imagery using computer vision

TL;DR: In this paper , a novel workflow for visual analysis of urban river landscapes by combining unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) oblique photography with computer vision (CV) and virtual reality (VR) is proposed.

Is virtual reality a valid tool for restorative environments research?

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors examined the validity of virtual reality for assessing the restorative quality of environments and found that perceived restorative characteristics, preference ratings, experienced pleasure and self-reported restoration were higher in a real natural environment compared to a real urban environment.

Perception of Driving Simulations: Can the Level of Detail of Virtual Scenarios Affect the Driver's Behavior and Emotions?

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigated possible correlations between driver behaviors and emotions, and simulated driving scenarios, and found that drivers' behavior changes in a very complex way, while simulator fidelity is crucial in task-driven interactions.

Measuring Presence in Virtual Environments: A Presence Questionnaire

TL;DR: Combined results from four experiments lead to the following conclusions: the PQ and ITQ are internally consistent measures with high reliability; there is a weak but consistent positive relation between presence and task performance in VEs; individuals who report more simulator sickness symptoms in VE report less presence than those who report fewer symptoms.

Defining Virtual Reality: Dimensions Determining Telepresence

TL;DR: In this paper, a variable-based definition of virtual reality is proposed, which can be used to classify virtual reality in relation to other media, such as TV, movies, etc.
Trending Questions (3)
Does VR impact Perceived Realism?

Yes, the paper states that the level of realism that can be attained with VR does impact affective responses and perceptions.

Does virtual reality have any effect on people's behavior?

The paper does not specifically mention the effect of virtual reality on people's behavior. The paper focuses on the impact of realism in virtual reality experiences on affective responses and participant perceptions.

What are the benefits of using virtual reality in isolated, confined extreme environments?

The benefits of using virtual reality in isolated, confined extreme environments include customizability, controlled experimental settings, and the ability to simulate nature when physical presence is not possible.
