Tumor promoters inhibit metabolic cooperation in cocultures of epidermal and 3T3 cells.

TLDR
Communication between 3T3 and HEL 37 cells was inhibited by inclusion of the tumor promoting agents, 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate and phorbl-12,13-didecanoate during coculture, and non-promoting derivatives of these phorbol esters did not inhibit transfer of label.

sources and effects of ionizing radiation

TL;DR: This annex is aimed at providing a sound basis for conclusions regarding the number of significant radiation accidents that have occurred, the corresponding levels of radiation exposures and numbers of deaths and injuries, and the general trends for various practices, in the context of the Committee's overall evaluations of the levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation.

Scrape-loading and dye transfer. A rapid and simple technique to study gap junctional intercellular communication.

TL;DR: A new, direct and rapid technique that employs scrape-loading to introduce a low molecular weight fluorescent dye, Lucifer yellow CH, into cells in culture and allows the monitoring of its transfer into contiguous cells, showing effective blockage of the dye transfer at non-cytotoxic doses.

Cell-cell communication in carcinogenesis.

TL;DR: The review examines how GJIC can be either transiently or stably modulated by endogenous or exogenesis chemicals or by oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes at the transcriptional, translational, or posttranslational levels.

Growth inhibition of transformed cells correlates with their junctional communication with normal cells.

TL;DR: It is shown that the growth inhibition of various chemically and virally transformed cell types in culture is inhibited when they are in contact with normal cell types, and that the cell-to-cell membrane channels of gap junctions are the likely conduits of the signals for this growth control.

Epidermal growth factor and a new derivative. Rapid isolation procedures and biological and chemical characterization.

TL;DR: A new procedure has been devised for the preparation of pure epidermal growth factor in high yield through a two-step column fractionation of crude extracts of the submaxillary gland obtained from adult male mice.

Metabolic coupling, ionic coupling and cell contacts.

TL;DR: Observations using electron microscopy and freeze-etching techniques show that both metabolic coupling and ionic coupling in fibroblasts are associated with the appearance of “gap” junctions.

Induction of Differentiation in Human Promyelocytic Leukemia Cells by Tumor Promoters

TL;DR: Phorbol diester tumor promoters and the promoter mezerein convert human promyelocytic leukemia cells in culture into adherent, nonproliferating cells with many of the characteristics of macrophages.
