TLDR
The results showed that hyperlactatemia, although it does not provide diagnostic information, indicates the severity of illness and the need for an early and aggressive intervention in critically ill foals, and lactatemia proved to be a reliable prognostic parameter.

A review of equine sepsis

TL;DR: Treatment of sepsis requires an intensive care approach that includes antimicrobial drug administration, fluid resuscitation and pressure support, and treatment for inflammation, endotoxaemia and coagulopathy.

Results of Screening of Apparently Healthy Senior and Geriatric Dogs

TL;DR: Physical and laboratory abnormalities are common in apparently healthy elderly dogs and frequency of orthopedic problems, frequency of (sub)cutaneous masses, and platelet count were significantly higher in geriatric compared with senior dogs.

Animal welfare in the newborn piglet: a review

TL;DR: The objective of this review is to integrate clinical findings and laboratory analyses in such a way to improve the welfare of newborn piglets and achieve better prognoses of neonatal viability.
Journal ArticleDOI

Topics in the Routine Assessment of Newborn Puppy Viability

TL;DR: This study proposes, in addition to an Apgar score analysis, the evaluation of laboratory parameters and weight, because knowledge of these reference values is essential for diagnosing at-risk neonates and for establishing suitable treatments.

Statistical methods for assessing agreement between two methods of clinical measurement.

TL;DR: An alternative approach, based on graphical techniques and simple calculations, is described, together with the relation between this analysis and the assessment of repeatability.

2001 SCCM/ESICM/ACCP/ATS/SIS International Sepsis Definitions Conference

TL;DR: A hypothetical model for staging sepsis is presented, which, in the future, may better characterize the syndrome on the basis of predisposing factors and premorbid conditions, the nature of the underlying infection, the characteristics of the host response, and the extent of the resultant organ dysfunction.

International pediatric sepsis consensus conference: definitions for sepsis and organ dysfunction in pediatrics.

TL;DR: The current criteria used to define SIRS and sepsis in adults were modified to incorporate pediatric physiologic variables appropriate for the following subcategories of children: newborn, neonate, infant, child, and adolescent.

Serial blood lactate levels can predict the development of multiple organ failure following septic shock

TL;DR: In patients with septic shock, serial determinations of blood lactate levels are good predictors of the development of MSOF an death and the duration of lactic acidosis is more important than the initial lactate value.

Lactate Clearance and Survival Following Injury

TL;DR: Evaluating 76 consecutive patients with multiple trauma admitted directly to the ICU from the operating room or emergency department found the time needed to normalize serum lactate levels is an important prognostic factor for survival in severely injured patients.
