Vertical geometric irregularity in stepped building frames

TLDR
In this paper, the authors proposed a regularity index to assess the degree of irregularities in a stepped building frame, and also proposed a modification of the code specified empirical formula for estimating fundamental period for regular frames, to estimate the fundamental time period of the stepped building.

Response of Reinforced Concrete Buildings in Concepción during the Maule Earthquake

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report that shear walls experienced failures that apparently started at the boundaries due to the high compression in these unconfined edges, and propagated into the wall web.

Review of different Structural irregularities in buildings

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarized the research works done in the past regarding different types of structural irregularities i.e. plan and vertical irregularities, and found that strength irregularity had the maximum impact and mass irregularity has the minimum impact on seismic response.
Journal ArticleDOI

Vertical Irregularity of Buildings: Regularity Index versus Seismic Risk

TL;DR: The seismic performance of buildings with irregular distribution of mass, stiffness, and strength along the height may be significantly different from that of regular buildings as mentioned in this paper, which may cause the buildings to exhibit different seismic performance.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation of the infill influence on the elastic period of existing RC frames

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of infills in the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) resisting frames has been analyzed in terms of modal properties, namely evaluating the elastic period by means an eigenvalue analysis on 2D models.
Journal ArticleDOI

Approximate Seismic Analysis of Multi-story Buildings with Mass and Stiffness Irregularities

TL;DR: In this paper, an approximate analysis for multi-story setback buildings subjected to strong ground motions is presented, which is based on Southwell's formula and the concept of the equivalent single story system.

Period formulas for moment-resisting frame buildings

TL;DR: In this paper, a regression analysis of the measured period data is used to estimate the fundamental vibration period of reinforced concrete (R/C) and steel moment-resisting frame buildings.

Seismic performance of R/C plane frames irregular in elevation

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of the ductility class on the cost of buildings is negligible, while the seismic performance of all irregular frames appears to be equally satisfactory, not inferior to (and in some cases superior than) that of the regular ones, even for motions twice as strong as the design earthquake.

Re-evaluation of building damage during recent earthquakes in Turkey

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the seismic performance of the most common reinforced concrete building stock in Turkey considering nonlinear behavior of the components and determined their seismic displacement demands using nonlinear response history analysis under selected ground motions.
