Critical investigations reveal that SPC based HVDC links in presence of FAR improves exceptionally damp the oscillations in the frequency and tie power response of the grid.Abstract:
The modern power system is advancing towards inverter-dominated system from synchronous dominated power system. Such transition could diminish the rotational inertia of power system and inevitably jeopardize the frequency stability. Several adaptations are required to make to supply short term inertial support in such low inertia grid. In this paper, synchronous power controller (SPC) strategy is applied in HVDC converter for inertia emulation. It is a phase-locked loop less concept for grid synchronization. Besides, present work also focused on designing a new strategy considering the advantages of communication and fast responding reserves such as battery storage and demand response collectively termed as fast acting reserve (FAR). FAR unit reacts to any power imbalance measured by the monitoring system. Critical investigations reveal that SPC based HVDC links in presence of FAR improves exceptionally damp the oscillations in the frequency and tie power response of the grid.read more

Dynamic Frequency Control Support by Energy Storage to Reduce the Impact of Wind and Solar Generation on Isolated Power System's Inertia
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used dynamic simulations to study the provision of such a dynamic frequency control support by energy storage systems in the French island of Guadeloupe with large shares of wind or solar generation, and showed that fast-acting storage, by acting as a synthetic inertia, can mitigate the impact of these sources on the dynamic performance of the studied island grid in the case of a major generation outage.
