Vitamin B12 Deficiency Due to a Strictly Vegetarian Diet in Adolescence
TLDR
A 14-year-old white girl suffered from severe neurologic disturbances caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, due to failure to provide vitamin B 12 supplementation to a strictly vegetarian diet, which resolved completely following treatment with vatamin B12.Abstract:
A 14-year-old white girl suffered from severe neurologic disturbances caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, due to failure to provide vitamin B12 supplementation to a strictly vegetarian diet. The disturbances resolved completely following treatment with vitamin B12. Physicians should be alert to the necessity for vitamin B12 supplementation for strict vegetarians, who eat no meat, fish, eggs, or dairy products.read more

Signs of impaired cognitive function in adolescents with marginal cobalamin status
Marieke W. J. Louwman,M. van Dusseldorp,F.J.R. van de Vijver,Chris M.G. Thomas,J Schneede,P M Ueland,Helga Refsum,W.A. van Staveren +7 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that cobalamin deficiency, in the absence of hematologic signs, may lead to impaired cognitive performance in adolescents.

Vitamin B12 deficiency in children and adolescents
TL;DR: Although the adult recommended dietary allowance for vitamin B12 is 2.4 μg/d, an adult stores about 2 to 3 mg (primarily in the liver).6 Therefore several years of dietary deficiency are usually necessary before the condition is clinically apparent.

Homocysteine levels in vegetarians versus omnivores.
TL;DR: The results show that the mild hyperhomocysteinemia in alternative nutrition is a consequence of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Frequency and risk factors of functional gastro-intestinal disorders in a rural Indian population.

TL;DR: As best estimates on functional gastrointestinal disorders prevalence are expected from community studies, which are scanty from Asia, this work evaluated the prevalence and risk factors of FGIDs in a rural Indian community.

Risk of persistent cobalamin deficiency in adolescents fed a macrobiotic diet in early life
M. van Dusseldorp,J Schneede,Helga Refsum,P M Ueland,Chris M.G. Thomas,E. de Boer,W.A. van Staveren +6 more
TL;DR: Serum cobalamin concentrations were significantly lower and concentrations of MMA and folate and mean corpuscular volume were significantly higher in macrobiotic adolescents than in control adolescents, indicating that moderate consumption of animal products is not sufficient for restoring normal cobalamina status in subjects with inadequate cobalamine intake during the early years of life.

A Syndrome of Methylmalonic Aciduria, Homocystinuria, Megaloblastic Anemia and Neurologic Abnormalities in a Vitamin B12-Deficient Breast-Fed Infant of a Strict Vegetarian
TL;DR: A six-month-old infant with severe megaloblastic anemia, coma and hyperpigmentation of the extremities was found to have methylmalonic aciduria and homocystinuria, and the importance of educating strict vegetarians about the deficiency of vitamin B12 in their diets was emphasized.

Nutritional Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Infants
TL;DR: A case of profound vitamin B12deficiency in the exclusively breast-fed infant of a vegan, manifesting the triad of megaloblastic anemia with pancytopenia, aminoaciduria, and neurologic changes, is reviewed to alert physicians to this easily preventable nutritional problem and to the need for early parental counseling and dietary supplementation.

Cobalamin deficiency and related disorders in infancy and childhood.

TL;DR: This review discusses recent knowledge of the many causes of cobalamin deficiency in infancy and childhood, and indicates that the ‘serum B12’ may be normal in cases of the grossest derangement of B12 metabolism, with extreme functional deficiency of this group of vitamins (the cobalamins).
