In 1961 the United Nations and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) established by parallel resolutions of the UN General Assembly (UN Doc. A/RES/1714 (XVI)) and of the FAO Conference the food aid organization of the UN, the World Food Programme (WFP), with the goal of making the fight against global hunger, poverty and malnutrition more efficient. WFPs main task is to transfer excess food production from industrialized countries to developing countries. Although the WFP is an autonomous organization, the Director-General of the FAO has to approve any provision of food aid. WFP is funded entirely by voluntary contributions from more than 60 governments and some private corporations. WFP is responsible for food distribution problems and is focused on the redistribution of food; it is not a development organization.
