In this article, a conceptual framework for understanding the entrance into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors by recent high school graduates attending 4-year institutions was proposed.
Abstract
This study draws upon social cognitive career theory and higher education literature to test a conceptual framework for understanding the entrance into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors by recent high school graduates attending 4-year institutions. Results suggest that choosing a STEM major is directly influenced by intent to major in STEM, high school math achievement, and initial postsecondary experiences, such as academic interaction and financial aid receipt. Exerting the largest impact on STEM entrance, intent to major in STEM is directly affected by 12th-grade math achievement, exposure to math and science courses, and math self-efficacy beliefs—all three subject to the influence of early achievement in and attitudes toward math. Multiple-group structural equation modeling analyses indicated heterogeneous effects of math achievement and exposure to math and science across racial groups, with their positive impact on STEM intent accruing most to White students and least ...

Assessing stem literacy in an informal learning environment

TL;DR: In this article, the authors employed psychometric techniques and discourse analysis to answer the overarching research question: How can STEM literacy amongst middle school students be assessed in the context of a summer STEM camp?

Exploring Historically Black College and universities' ethos of racial uplift: STEM students' challenges and institutions' practices for cultivating learning and persistence in STEM

TL;DR: Gasman et al. as mentioned in this paper conducted a case study of STEM education at four HBCUs and found that these services make a meaningful difference in the achievement of students in STEM by providing them with sound relationships and effective study skills, embedded within a culture of family, that help them overcome the challenges associated with the gateway courses.

Who is a scientist? The relationship between counter-stereotypical beliefs about scientists and the STEM major intentions of Black and Latinx male and female students

TL;DR: For example, the authors employed an intersectional lens to examine whether the prevalence of counter-stereotypical views of scientists, and the association such views have on subsequent intentions to pursue STEM college majors, varies among students from different gender and racial/ethnic groups (e.g., Black female students, Latinx male students).

A longitudinal study of psychological needs satisfaction, value, achievement, and elective music intentions:

TL;DR: In this paper, a study aimed to explain motivational factors that influence students' intentions to continue studying music in high school and their achievement in high-school music, and the participants were 180 participants.

Are 2-Year Colleges the Key? Institutional Variation and the Gender Gap in Undergraduate STEM Degrees

TL;DR: For example, the authors found that the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) higher education has rarely considered 2-year colleges, despite the fact that most enrollees are women.
