TL;DR: In this paper, the distortion of grid-generated turbulence as it approaches the stagnation region of a two-dimensional bluff body was studied and the level of the pressure fluctuations can be predicted by a direct application of Bernoulli's equation.
Abstract: This paper describes an experimental study of the distortion of grid-generated turbulence as it approaches the stagnation region of a two-dimensional bluff body. When Lx/D [Gt ] 1, where Lx, is the scale of turbulence and D is a typical body dimension, along the mean stagnation streamline will amplify because of vortex stretching. When Lx/D = O(1) there is found to be a combination of these effects with attenuation of energy at low wavenumbers and amplification at high wavenumbers. Measurements of the pressure fluctuations at the stagnation point show that at low wavenumbers the level of the pressure fluctuations can be predicted by a direct application of Bernoulli's equation.

TL;DR: In this article, a weakly mixing skew product transformation is defined, where σ is a Bernoulli shift and f is a function satisfying a Holder type condition and measurable with respect to the past partition of σ.
Abstract: IfT is a weakly mixing skew product transformation defined byT(x, y)=σx, y+f(x) (mod 1)), where σ is a Bernoulli shift andf is a function satisfying a Holder type condition and measurable with respect to the past of an independent partition of σ, thenT is Bernoulli.

TL;DR: In this paper, a family of closed-under-sampling prior distributions, called the Dirichlet-beta family, for interrelated Bernoulli processes has been studied.
Abstract: If the joint prior distribution of the parameters and of two Bernoulli processes exhibits dependence, we will say the processes are “interrelated.” This article motivates and studies a family of closed-under-sampling prior distributions, called the Dirichlet-beta family, for interrelated Bernoulli processes. This family arises naturally from consideration of bivariate Bernoulli processes on which some observations are incomplete. Since Dirichlet-beta distributions are intractable, several Dirichlet approximations are proposed. The quality of one of these approximations is investigated and appears to be quite good. Several possible applications are suggested.

TL;DR: In this article, an analytic perturbation solution with a realistic mathematical model such that the gate opening is relatively small and the upstream free surface is horizontal is considered for flow under a sluice gate of variable angle.
Abstract: The problem is considered for an analytic perturbation solution with a realistic mathematical model such that the gate opening is relatively small and the upstream free surface is horizontal. Solutions for the discharge and contraction coefficients are obtained in terms of a small parameter. Conformal mapping, analytic continuation and perturbation methods combined to obtain the solution correctly up to the second order. The discharge and contraction coefficients which are obtained from the solutions are compared with those obtained by others. Flow under a sluice gate of variable angle is separately dealt with by similar procedures. Due to complexity resulting from the variable angle, solutions for the coefficients of discharge and contraction have been obtained only up to the first order. From the Bernoulli equation on free surfaces, the boundary equations and conditions are obtained for the Ω-function. From solutions for the Ω-function, the second order perturbation solutions are obtained for a vertical sluice gate.

TL;DR: The characteristics of the subclass of stochastic automata realizable by ABNLSC's are found and include: commutativity with respect to input sequences; state minimality; doubly Stochastic state transition matrices; and the conditions for the existence of asymptotic distribution of the state.
Abstract: In the search for new methods to realize stochastic automata, additive Bernoulli noise linear sequential circuits (ABNLSC) are constructed from linear sequential circuits fed with Bernoulli noise. The characteristics of the subclass of stochastic automata realizable by ABNLSC's are found. These characteristics include: commutativity with respect to input sequences; state minimality; doubly stochastic state transition matrices; and the conditions for the existence of asymptotic distribution of the state.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theory of the transient Bernoulli-Euler beam problem on an elastic foundation is presented, which takes into account the effects of axial load and linear damping.
Abstract: This paper presents a theory of the transient Bernoulli-Euler beam problem on an elastic foundation which takes into account the effects of axial load and linear damping. An analytical solution of the steady state and the transient components has been obtained due to physically realistic load distributions. With a view to extend its practical applicability, the characteristic features of the solution are explored. Several limiting situations are investigated as special cases. It is shown that the steady state vibration can be achieved as the limit of the solution of the transient problem.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the pressure of a dilute polymer solution on the centerline of an axisymmetric contraction can be obtained explicitly in the flow of the solution.
Abstract: The pressure is obtained explicitly in the flow (beginning from uniformity) of a dilute polymer solution on the centerline of an axisymmetric contraction. Use is made of an asymptotic representation (derived elsewhere) for quasisteady behavior of a simple molecular model.

TL;DR: In this paper, the motion of a medium consisting of neutral particles and charged particles of single sign is studied under the assumption that the electric Reynolds number (Rq =u/bE) is large.
Abstract: The motion of a medium consisting of neutral particles and charged particles of single sign is studied under the assumption that the electric Reynolds number (Rq=u/bE) is large. We calculate the “freezingin” integral and the Bernoulli and Cauchy-Lagrange integrals, study the fluid motion in a stream tube, and formulate the boundary layer problem.

TL;DR: In this article, the motion of two high-speed trains passing one another while moving in opposite directions is simulated using inviscid hydrodynamics, and the forces acting on the cylinders are determined by an integration of the unsteady Bernoulli equation.
Abstract: The motion of two high-speed trains passing one another while moving in opposite directions is simulated using inviscid hydrodynamics. The method of images is used to generate the cylinders which represent the trains. The forces acting on the cylinders are determined by an integration of the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Excellent agreement with previous calculations for the pressure coefficient and intertia coefficient is obtained for two one-car trains. Two five-car trains are represented using this method and the results agree qualitatively with some experimental data obtained from a high-speed Japanese train. The lift and inertia coefficients for several of the cars are plotted to demonstrate the inviscid interaction of one train with the other.

TL;DR: In this article, exact formulas for the number of trajectories of a Bernoulli random walk which have a fixed number of successes and predetermined maximum and minimum values are derived for the indeterminate part of the amplitude.
Abstract: Exact formulas are derived for the number of trajectories of a Bernoulli random walk which have a fixed number of successes and predetermined maximum and minimum values. The asymptotic distribution is found for the indeterminate part of the amplitude for large deviations. The exact distribution of the trajectory amplitude of a Wiener process is also found and investigated. Bibliography: 4 items.

TL;DR: In this article, a discharge formula derived in terms of total pressure by use of Bernoulli's Equation, modified for use with normal pressures is presented, which is used to reconcile experimentally determined sprinkler system flows and pressures with values calculated by the usual methods.
Abstract: Often it is difficult to reconcile experimentally determined sprinkler system flows and pressures with values calculated by the usual methods. Improved accuracy and greater simplicity can be obtained by using a discharge formula derived in terms of total pressure by use of Bernoulli’s Equation, modified for use with normal pressures.
