Abstract: A laser rangefinder for clouds, fog, haze and precipitation including an erbium doped laser transmitter, a germanium photodiode monitor and a germanium avalanche photodiode detector. The germanium avalanche photodiode and an amplifier module is positioned at the focus of a parabolic reflector. The transmitter transmits light in a waveband with an optical center at 1.54 microns and is eye safe. A periscope system aligns the outgoing pulse with the returning light to reduce parallax. To reduce alignment problems when shifts in wavelengths occur, an optical circuit with only reflecting surfaces can be employed. To increase the efficiency of the laser transmitter, the clamps utilized to position the laser rod within the cavity are formed of the same material as the laser rod and the pump light reflector is a second surface mirror with a quartz substrate coated in succession with silver, copper and black paint.

TL;DR: In this paper, the members which are utilized to hold and position a rod of erbium laser glass material within an imaging cavity are formed of a glass material which is transparent at the pumping wavelengths of the ions and/or associated sensitizer ions in order to prevent masking of the laser rod to the pumping light energy at those locations where the holders come into contact with the rod.
Abstract: The members which are utilized to hold and position a rod of erbium laser glass material within an imaging cavity are formed of a glass material which is transparent at the pumping wavelengths of the erbium ions and/or associated sensitizer ions in order to prevent masking of the laser rod to the pumping light energy at those locations where the holders come into contact with the laser rod. This arrangement optimizes the performance of the erbium glass laser rod configuration.

TL;DR: In this paper, a laser projection microscope operating at λ = 1.5 μ was built and the investigated object was illuminated and the brightness of the image was amplified using the active medium of a pulse barium vapor laser.
Abstract: A laser projection microscope operating at λ = 1.5 μ was built. The investigated object was illuminated and the brightness of the image was amplified using the active medium of a pulse barium vapor laser. The image was visualized employing anti-Stokes phosphors based on yttrium oxychlorides activated with ytterbium and erbium. Images of some microscopic objects, illustrating the capabilities of the instrument, were obtained.

TL;DR: In this article, the ten third-order elastic (TOE) constants of erbium have been calculated from a nearest-neighbour central-interaction model and compared with the measured values.
Abstract: The ten third-order elastic (TOE) constants of erbium have been calculated from a nearest-neighbour central-interaction model. The calculated TOE constants are used to evaluate the pressure derivatives of the second- older elastic (SOE) constants of erbium and are compared with the measured values. The TOE constants of erbium obtained on the central-force model agree well with those obtained from Keating's model for hexagonal metals.

TL;DR: Fluorescence modulation has been used to optically detect excited state paramagnetic resonance of Er 3+ in LiYF 4, and ground state EPR has been similarly detected both through resonant reabsorption of the fluorescence and memory effects active over the optical absorption cycle.

TL;DR: In this paper, the available sets of crystal field parameters for erbium and thulium ethyl sulphates are used to calculate the Stark levels,g-values, Schottky specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, hyperfine interaction parameters and low temperature specific heat of these compounds.
Abstract: The available sets of crystal field parameters for erbium and thulium ethyl sulphates are used to calculate the Stark levels,g-values, Schottky specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, hyperfine interaction parameters and low temperature specific heat of these compounds. A comparison of these calculations with experimental data shows that one of these sets can be taken to be optimum within the accuracy of various measurements. These parameters along with the already optimised ones for other ethyl sulphates are discussed in the frameworks of electrostatic, angular overlap and superposition models for the crystalline fields. The antibonding energy parameter and ionicity are found to be different for light and heavy compounds and almost constant in either half of the series.

TL;DR: In this paper, the problem of deconvolution of overlapping intensity peaks is discussed and calibration curves for rare earth oxides in the different base glasses are established by means of energy dispersive X-ray analysis.
Abstract: This paper deals with the quantitative analysis of neodymium, erbium and ytterbium oxides in borate, silicate and tellurite glasses by means of energy dispersive X-ray analysis in a scanning electron microscope. The problem of the deconvolution of overlapping intensity peaks is discussed and calibration curves for rare earth oxides in the different base glasses are established.
