TL;DR: A multi-angle lensfree holographic imaging platform that can accurately characterize both the axial and lateral positions of cells located within multi-layered micro-channels is introduced and provides a compact and high-throughput alternative to conventional approaches for cytometry and diagnostics applications involving lab on a chip systems.
Abstract: A multi-angle lensfree holographic imaging platform that can accurately characterize both the axial and lateral positions of cells located within multi-layered micro-channels is introduced. In this platform, lensfree digital holograms of the micro-objects on the chip are recorded at different illumination angles using partially coherent illumination. These digital holograms start to shift laterally on the sensor plane as the illumination angle of the source is tilted. Since the exact amount of this lateral shift of each object hologram can be calculated with an accuracy that beats the diffraction limit of light, the height of each cell from the substrate can be determined over a large field of view without the use of any lenses. We demonstrate the proof of concept of this multi-angle lensless imaging platform by using light emitting diodes to characterize various sized microparticles located on a chip with sub-micron axial and lateral localization over ~60 mm2 field of view. Furthermore, we successfully apply this lensless imaging approach to simultaneously characterize blood samples located at multi-layered micro-channels in terms of the counts, individual thicknesses and the volumes of the cells at each layer. Because this platform does not require any lenses, lasers or other bulky optical/mechanical components, it provides a compact and high-throughput alternative to conventional approaches for cytometry and diagnostics applications involving lab on a chip systems.

TL;DR: This work investigates how the volumetric effect of scattering cancellation provided by plasmonic media may drastically suppress the scattering for these irregular geometries independent of the illumination angle and sheds some light on the physical mechanisms and the design rules at the basis of this cloaking technique when applied to objects whose scattering properties are dependent upon polarization and angle of incidence.
Abstract: Here we extend the plasmonic cloaking technique to irregularly shaped objects with anisotropic scattering response. The scattering-cancellation approach to cloaking [A. Alu and N. Engheta, Phys. Rev. E 72, 016623 (2005)] has been extensively applied in the past to symmetrical geometries and canonical shapes. However, recent papers have raised some doubts concerning the fact that its use may not be as effective when dealing with strongly anisotropic and noncanonical geometries. Our goal here is to extend the plasmonic cloaking technique to irregular obstacles and to show that proper cloak design may provide a significant and uniform scattering reduction, independent of angle of incidence, position, and polarization of the illumination. We investigate how the volumetric effect of scattering cancellation provided by plasmonic media may drastically suppress the scattering for these irregular geometries independent of the illumination angle, and we shed some light on the physical mechanisms and the design rules at the basis of this cloaking technique when applied to objects whose scattering properties are dependent upon polarization and angle of incidence.

TL;DR: The anisotropic reflectance from turbid media predicted using the radiative transfer based DORT2002 model is experimentally verified through goniophotometric measurements to show that relatively more light is reflected at large polar angles when the absorption or illumination angle is increased or when the medium thickness is decreased.
Abstract: The anisotropic reflectance from turbid media predicted using the radiative transfer based DORT2002 model is experimentally verified through goniophotometric measurements. A set of paper samples with varying amounts of dye and thickness is prepared, and their angle resolved reflectance is measured. An alleged perfect diffusor is also included. The corresponding simulations are performed. A complete agreement between the measurements and model predictions is seen regarding the characteristics of the anisotropy. They show that relatively more light is reflected at large polar angles when the absorption or illumination angle is increased or when the medium thickness is decreased. This is due to the relative amount of near-surface bulk scattering increasing in these cases. This affects the application of the Kubelka–Munk model as well as standards for reflectance measurements and calibration routines.

Abstract: Some embodiments of the present invention disclose systems and methods for a multiplexed multispectral imaging, object discrimination, background discrimination, and/or object identification. In some embodiments, a multispectral sensor is provided that includes at least two illumination sources and an imager with a color filter array. The two illumination sources can illuminate a platen with light having distinct illumination angles as well as distinct characteristics, such as distinct wavelengths or wavelength bands and/or distinct polarization conditions. The color filter array, which may be integral with the imager or separate therefrom, can filter light based on the specific distinctions between the two illumination sources. A single image of an object at the platen can be acquired. Individual pixels of the image will then be highly associated with one or the other illumination source. Because of the filtering by the color filter array, this image will include information about the illumination angle.

TL;DR: This work presents a simple and effective method for a wide-angle light-emitting diode module by using a single lens corrugated with micropattern arrays that has the wide illumination angle as well as the high extraction efficiency of an incoming LED light source compared with a conventional dome lens.
Abstract: This work presents a simple and effective method for a wide-angle light-emitting diode module by using a single lens corrugated with micropattern arrays. Impinged onto the micropattern arrays of a curved surface, light undergoes an enhancement of the illumination angle due to omnidirectional diffraction. A hemispherical dome lens with micropattern arrays is microfabricated by a reconfigurable microtemplating and a replica molding method. Depending on the micropattern size, the experimental and simulation results show the micropatterned single lens has the wide illumination angle as well as the high extraction efficiency of an incoming LED light source, compared with a conventional dome lens.

TL;DR: In this paper, an illumination optics for EUV microlithography is proposed, which guides an illumination light bundle from a radiation source to an object field with an extension ratio between a longer field dimension and a shorter field dimension, where the ratio is considerably greater than 1.
Abstract: An illumination optics for EUV microlithography guides an illumination light bundle from a radiation source to an object field with an extension ratio between a longer field dimension and a shorter field dimension, where the ratio is considerably greater than 1. A field facet mirror has a plurality of field facets that set defined illumination conditions in the object field. A following optics downstream of the field facet mirror transmits the illumination light into the object field. The following optics includes a pupil facet mirror with a plurality of pupil facets. The field facets are in each case individually allocated to the pupil facets so that portions of the illumination light bundle impinging upon in each case one of the field facets are guided on to the object field via the associated pupil facet. The field facet mirror not only includes a plurality of basic illumination field facets which provide a basic illumination of the object field via associated basic illumination pupil facets, but also includes a plurality of correction illumination field facets which provide for a correction of the illumination of the object field via associated correction illumination pupil facets. The result is an illumination optics which allows unwanted variations of illumination parameters, for instance an illumination intensity distribution or an illumination angle distribution, to be corrected across the object field.

Abstract: A method of imaging a target area of the subsoil from “walkaway” data having application to development of oil reservoirs or monitoring of geologic storage sites is disclosed. After acquisition of seismic data of walkaway type and estimation of the rate of propagation of the seismic waves in the subsoil, p illumination angles are selected. The seismic measurements are then converted to data D p by illumination angle. The distribution of acoustic impedances best explaining data D p is determined within the target by using a non-linear inversion which minimizes a difference between the data D p obtained from measurements and data by illumination angle resulting from an estimation. This estimation is performed by solving a wave propagation equation from the velocity field, an acoustic impedance distribution and a pressure distribution at the level of the top of the target for each illumination angle.

Abstract: An enlargement method of reconstruction angle by time-sharing tilted illumination in a three-dimensional (3D) display system based on wavefront modulation is presented. In a recording system, an array of phase-shifting interferometer is used for recording the wavefront data from 3D object in wide angle. In a reconstruction system, single display device such as spatial light modulator is illuminated with tilted plane waves for wide angle reconstruction. Tilted illumination causes the spatial shift of reconstructed 3D object according to the illumination angle. We propose a method to reduce the spatial shift by changing the reconstruction position around display plane. Experimental and numerical results are presented.

Abstract: A new method of optical imaging that can generate the section images of arbitrarily tilted planes has been developed from illumination-angle-scanning digital interference holography. A set of complex object fields are reconstructed from the holograms captured as the illumination angle is varied with uniform intervals. After the complex fields are modified with phase ramps that match the tilt (relative to the hologram plane) of a desired observation plane, the image of the object sliced along the tilted plane is obtained from their superposition. The axial resolution of a system employing this method is measured with a step height standard, and it is applied to the tomographic inspection of a microelectromechanical system.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the transfer function of TSI in 3D k-space, evaluate the 3D point spread function and present simulated results, which can be used to obtain a more complete description of the imaging properties of the system for tomographic optical diffraction.
Abstract: Tilt Scanning Interferometry (TSI) has been recently developed as an experimental method to measure multi-component displacement fields inside the volume of semitransparent scattering materials. It can be considered as an extension of speckle interferometry in 3D, in which the illumination angle is tilted to provide depth information, or as an optical diffraction tomography technique with phase detection. It relies on phase measurements to extract the displacement information, as in the usual 2D counterparts. A numerical model to simulate the speckle fields recorded in TSI has been recently developed to enable the study on how the phase and amplitude are affected by factors such as refraction, absorption, scattering, dispersion, stress-optic coupling and spatial variations of the refractive index, all of which may lead to spurious displacements. In order to extract depth-resolved structure and phase information from TSI data, the approach had been to use Fourier Transformation of the intensity modulation signal along the illumination angle axis. However, it turns out that a more complete description of the imaging properties of the system for tomographic optical diffraction can be achieved using a 3D representation of the transfer function in k-space. According to this formalism, TSI is presented as a linear filtering operation. In this paper we describe the transfer function of TSI in 3D k-space, evaluate the 3D point spread function and present simulated results.
