TL;DR: The result indicated that the essential oil of T. asiatica roots and the three isolated constituents have potential for use in control of A. albopictus larvae and could be useful in search of newer, safer, and more effective natural compounds as larvicides.
Abstract: The aim of this research was to determine larvicidal activity of the essential oil derived from roots of Toddalia asiatica (L.) Lam. and the isolated constituents against the larvae of the Culicidae mosquito Aedes albopictus. Essential oil of T. asiatica roots was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. A total of 58 components of the essential oil of T. asiatica roots were identified. The essential oil has almost same content of (35.41 %) of sesquiterpenoids and monoterpenoids (31.87 %). The principal compounds in T. asiatica essential oil were geraniol (9.84 %), d-limonene (7.52 %), isopimpinellin (6.62 %), α-gurjunene (6.25 %), and 4-vinylguaiacol (5.94 %). Based on bioactivity-directed fractionation, geraniol, d-limonene, and isopimpinellin were isolated from T. asiatica root essential oil. Geraniol, d-limonene, and isopimpinellin exhibited strong larvicidal activity against A. albopictus with LC50 values of 30.13, 19.84, and 32.05 μg/ml, respectively, while the essential oil of T. asiatica had an LC50 value of 69.09 μg/ml. The result indicated that the essential oil of T. asiatica roots and the three isolated constituents have potential for use in control of A. albopictus larvae and could be useful in search of newer, safer, and more effective natural compounds as larvicides.

TL;DR: In this article, the anticholinesterase activity of petroleum ether and methanol extracts of the plant and the isolated furocoumarins was investigated against acetylcholine and butyrylcholine-choline enzymes by the Ellman method in vitro.
Abstract: The petroleum ether extract of Heracleum platytaenium afforded 8 furocoumarins (psoralen, bergapten, xanthotoxin, pimpinellin, isopimpinellin, sphondin, byakangelicin, and heraclenol) and the methanol extract of H. platytaenium gave only 1 glycosylated dihydrofurocoumarin, apterin. In addition, stigmasterol was also obtained from petroleum ether extract. Structure identification of the isolated compounds has been achieved by using spectroscopic methods, namely 1D and 2D NMR experiments and mass spectral analyses. The antioxidant activity of the extracts and pure compounds was investigated by 2 methods, including DPPH free radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity by b-carotene-linoleic acid assays. The anticholinesterase activity of petroleum ether and methanol extracts of the plant and the isolated furocoumarins was investigated against acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes by the Ellman method in vitro.

TL;DR: The impact of functional groups on anti-larval settlement activities suggested that the groups on C-5′ and C-2′/C-3′ of isoamylene chian could affect the AF activities.
Abstract: In the search for new environmental friendly antifouling (AF) agents, four coumarins were isolated from the herbal plant Cnidium monnieri, known as osthole (1), imperatorin (2), isopimpinellin (3) and auraptenol (4). Furthermore, five coumarin derivatives, namely 8-epoxypentylcoumarin (5), meranzin hydrate (6), 2′-deoxymetranzin hydrate (7), 8-methylbutenalcoumarin (8), and micromarin-F (9) were synthesized from osthole. Compounds 1, 2, 4, 7 showed high inhibitory activities against larval settlement of Balanus albicostatus with EC50 values of 4.64, 3.39, 3.38, 4.67 μg mL−1. Compound 8 could significantly inhibit larval settlement of Bugula neritina with an EC50 value of 3.87 μg mL−1. The impact of functional groups on anti-larval settlement activities suggested that the groups on C-5′ and C-2′/C-3′ of isoamylene chian could affect the AF activities.

TL;DR: Findings suggest that 5-geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin has potential as a cancer preventive agent.
Abstract: For the first time, three coumarins were isolated from the hexane extract of limes (Citrus aurantifolia) and purified by flash chromatography. The structures were identified by NMR (1D, 2D) and mass spectral analyses as 5-geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin, limettin, and isopimpinellin. These compounds inhibited human colon cancer (SW-480) cell proliferation, with 5-geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin showing the highest inhibition activity (67 %) at 25 µM. Suppression of SW480 cell proliferation by 5-geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin was associated with induction of apoptosis, as evidenced by annexin V staining and DNA fragmentation. In addition, 5-geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin arrested cells at the G0/G1 phase, and induction of apoptosis was demonstrated through the activation of tumour suppressor gene p53, caspase8/3, regulation of Bcl2, and inhibition of p38 MAPK phosphorylation. These findings suggest that 5-geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin has potential as a cancer preventive agent.
