TL;DR: In this paper , a review of the existing literature reveals that although researchers have, time and again, attempted to document failure in open innovation, this literature is comparatively sparse and fragmented.
Abstract: With the increasing need for firms to implement innovation in their pursuit of competitive advantage, open innovation has attracted the growing attention of academics and practitioners. However, the current literature has been lopsided, focussing predominantly on the myriad benefits of open innovation. We argue that eulogising only the positive aspects of open innovation is insufficient to help firms and motivate future research. Therefore, we recommend increased attention to the dark side of open innovation, which includes failures that can occur at various stages of the open innovation process. A review of the existing literature reveals that although researchers have, time and again, attempted to document failure in open innovation, this literature is comparatively sparse and fragmented. The extant literature also exhibits an apparent lack of effort to encourage future research, as evidenced by the absence of a comprehensive literature review. We aim to address this research gap by reviewing 76 studies identified by applying a stringent search protocol consistent with the systematic literature review (SLR) methodology. The contributions of this SLR include (a) development of a research profile of the relevant literature, (b) identification of five thematic areas, (c) elucidation of research gaps and suggestion of potential research questions as an agenda for future research on failures in open innovation, (d) formulation of a conceptual framework comprising the antecedents and outcomes of open innovation failure and (e) presentation of the various theoretical and managerial implications for scholars and practitioners.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors explored the relationship between open innovation (OI) and organizational culture and found that adhocracy culture is the type of OC that most influences the adoption of inbound and outbound OI flows.
Abstract: • The relationships between open innovation (OI) and organizational culture are explored. • Adhocracy culture is found to be the type that most influences the adoption of inbound and outbound OI. • Hierarchy culture discourages the adoption of OI. • Outbound OI has not been shown to influence innovative performance. The exploration and retention of knowledge are key elements for improving innovative performance. Although some studies indicate that organizational culture (OC) is a factor that influences knowledge management in companies, the relationships between different types of OC and the adoption of open innovation (OI) remain unclear, especially in the context of emerging economies such as Brazil. Our study addresses this research gap by investigating the relationships among OC, inbound and outbound OI, innovation ecosystems and innovative performance. With data collected from 169 companies in Brazil, our main results show that adhocracy culture is the type of OC that most influences the adoption of inbound and outbound OI flows, and that hierarchy culture discourages the adoption of OI. Our results also suggest the importance of adopting knowledge management practices that foster creativity and flexibility.

TL;DR: This paper identifies the key emerging themes of open innovation in crisis, which can help provide policy recommendations for the healthcare sector, businesses, and society to recover from the crisis.
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused huge and disruptive technological changes in the healthcare sector, transforming the way businesses and societies function. To respond to the global health crisis, there have been numerous innovation projects in the healthcare sector, including the fast design and manufacturing of personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical devices, and testing, treatment, and vaccine technologies. Many of these innovative activities happen beyond organizational boundaries with collaboration and open innovation. In this paper, we review the current literature on open innovation strategy during the pandemic and adopt the co-evolution view of business ecosystems to address the context of change. Based on a detailed exploration of the COVID-19-related technologies in the UK and global healthcare sectors, we identify the key emerging themes of open innovation in crisis. Further discussions are conducted in relation to each theme. Our results and analysis can help provide policy recommendations for the healthcare sector, businesses, and society to recover from the crisis.

TL;DR: The individual model of an open car-sharing system developed in this article was constructed in such a way as to support operators during the transformation of current business models into a modern open model.
Abstract: The car-sharing market is changing at a dynamic pace. Along with changes and new user habits, car-sharing systems are required to make this market even more accessible and flexible. This solution is possible due to the joining of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) systems and the sharing of data, as well as the implementation of open innovations. However, these are aspects that strongly interfere with the business models of car-sharing systems. Due to this fact, this article is dedicated to the subject of business models in car-sharing systems and the issues of using data sharing and implementing open innovations. This study aimed to analyze the current state of business models and to propose an individual business model of an open car-sharing system based on the concept of open innovation and data sharing. As part of the study, expert surveys were carried out. The results obtained indicate that the dynamics of business models and the development of innovation in car-sharing enterprises are being disrupted. Moreover, most of the current business models are not updated. They also do not consider the subject of open innovation and data sharing, despite operators considering this problem to be significant. The individual model of an open car-sharing system developed in this article was constructed in such a way as to support operators during the transformation of current business models into a modern open model.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors developed a model of key antecedents to sustainability-focused innovation and found that a higher level of global focus is associated with greater sustainability focused innovation, while the influence of open innovation is positive at a moderate level but diminishes when open innovation becomes excessive.
Abstract: • A higher level of global focus is associated with greater sustainability-focused innovation. • Open innovation exhibits a curvilinear (inverted U-shaped) relationship with sustainability-focused innovation such that the influence of open innovation is positive at a moderate level but diminishes when open innovation becomes excessive. • The relationship between open innovation and sustainability-focused innovation is contingent on the proactiveness of the firm’s innovation strategy. • Sustainability-focused innovation is positively related to a firm’s NPD performance. Although researchers and managers have examined various business outcomes of sustainability, the literature offers little insight into how firms could cultivate a higher level of sustainability focus in their NPD endeavors. Drawing upon the literature on sustainability and new product innovation and using a competency-based and dynamic capabilities perspective as the theoretical lens, this study develops a model of key antecedents to sustainability-focused innovation. Data from a survey of managers in 228 business-to-business firms suggest that 1) a higher level of global focus is associated with greater sustainability-focused innovation, 2) open innovation exhibits a curvilinear (inverted U-shaped) relationship with sustainability-focused innovation such that the influence of open innovation is positive at a moderate level but diminishes when open innovation becomes excessive, 3) the relationship between open innovation and sustainability-focused innovation is contingent on a firm’s innovation strategy, and 4) sustainability-focused innovation is positively related to a firm’s NPD performance.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors investigated the relationship between OI activities, reverse-knowledge sharing, stakeholder relationship and SMEs performance in a context of numerous Vietnamese industries and concluded that OI is statistically insignificant when related to SMEs' overall performance.
Abstract: Although Small-to-Medium-sized-Enterprises (SMEs) frequently make vital contributions to both national and global economics and innovations, the relative influences of Open Innovation (OI) on SME performance is inconsistently argued in the literature. This study is set to fill this gap through an investigation of the details and dynamics of SMEs’ engagement in OI. Further, its impact on performance, through the perspective of knowledge networking, is examined. Specifically, this study investigates the relationships between OI activities, reverse-knowledge sharing, stakeholder relationship and SMEs performance in a context of numerous Vietnamese industries. Results revealed that OI activities are statistically insignificant when related to SMEs’ overall performance. However, it should be noted that OI indirectly affects SME performance through the mediation effect of reverse-knowledge sharing and the moderation effect of stakeholder relations. Practical implications and theoretical potential for future research are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors examine the introduction of global practices into the Nicaraguan context and propose a model for the systemic development of enabling structures, value creation, and innovation spaces when transferring practices into new application areas.
Abstract: While open innovation and university–industry collaboration contribute significantly to innovation in industrialized countries, it is less clear how these create value in emerging economies and new application contexts. This study examines the introduction of global practices into the Nicaraguan context. Adopting a service-dominant logic perspective of value co-creation through interaction on multiple levels, we noted the importance of systemic orchestration or staging of the ecosystem, organizations, and challenge project delivery. We also recognize the importance of enabling activities and spaces that promote innovation. While our findings indicated that the expected and perceived value creation did not fully match, we found encouraging signs of the build-up of foundational practices to support national development agendas. There is evidence of shifted mindsets and looped learning across the system. We propose a model for the systemic development of enabling structures, value creation, and innovation spaces when transferring practices into new application areas. We expect this model to be useful for practitioners when planning and engaging in transferring open innovation practices across application contexts. The study contributes to our knowledge and practice of creating value through applying open innovation within university–industry collaboration in emerging economies, a little-studied theme.

TL;DR: In this article , a framework combining both inbound and outbound open innovation with the four-stage new product development (NPD) process is proposed to explore the open innovation strategies adopted by high-tech SMEs in emerging economies for NPD and the reasons behind it.
Abstract: With the diversity of customer needs and complexity of technology innovation, many high-tech small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) turn to open innovation, to produce the perfect match between market demands and firm resources. However, questions still exist in relation to open innovation in SMEs. Based on a framework combining both inbound and outbound open innovation with the four-stage new product development (NPD) process, this article explores the open innovation strategies adopted by high-tech SMEs in emerging economies for NPD and the reasons behind it through case studies. Results show that high-tech SMEs in emerging economies selectively adopt open innovation for NPD at different stages with various partners based on their needs. High-tech SMEs prefer to be closed to protect the know-how at the experimentation stage. Regarding the open innovation strategy, at ideation stage, SMEs adopt inbound open innovation for basic research and customer knowledge, while at manufacturing and commercialization stages, SMEs conduct both inbound and outbound open innovation. The analysis raises awareness of customer knowledge and customization to high-tech SMEs for NPD. This article contributes to the theories and practices on open innovation in SMEs.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors apply exploratory, bibliometric, and network visualization techniques to characterize the available knowledge in the field of open eco-innovation and trace the growth trajectory of this emerging literature and map the knowledge base of the open ecoinnovation research field.
Abstract: Open innovation runs contrary to the individualistic mentality of traditional corporate R&D implementation while embracing external cooperation in a complex world. Our main motivation for the study is to assess and characterize knowledge structure that represents radical transformation toward accelerating co‐development of sustainable innovations. Our review points to the role of the open eco-innovation research landscape as an emerging research domain of potential contributions to sustainable development. Specifically, in this systematic analysis, we apply exploratory, bibliometric, and network visualization techniques to characterize the available knowledge in the field. We trace the growth trajectory of this emerging literature and map the knowledge base of the open eco-innovation (OE) research field. We conceptualised four phases of research domain development and recognised that OE is at the acceleration phase. We emphasized that a synthetic knowledge base is one of the basic ingredients of an open eco-innovation model in addition to analytic and symbolic knowledge bases. Finally, we highlighted what might seem to be budding theoretical perspectives underlining open eco-innovation.

TL;DR: In this article , the role of absorptive capacity, as a set of knowledge creation processes, in the relationship between social media and open innovation in the family firm context is examined.
Abstract: The purpose of the study is to empirically examine the role of absorptive capacity, as a set of knowledge creation processes, in the relationship between social media and open innovation in the family firm context. In addition, the study analyses the impact of social media use as an antecedent of open innovation in the firms. The examined sample was composed by 113 responding family firms in Spain. The model was estimated through PLS-SEM with smartPLS software 3.3.3. Results confirm the key role played by absorptive capacity in the relationship between social media use and open innovation, proving also how social media use appears as a relevant enabler of open innovation practices. Moreover, findings support the importance of social media use for acquiring external information and knowledge which in turn can help family firms to gain more innovative opportunities. Our paper suggests that managers of family firms should foster an appropriate culture of learning in their firms and provide specific training to develop the staff ability to acquire, integrate and use information captured by digital platforms. Social media has totally transformed the way firms relate to the market and provides a useful tool to collect external knowledge and information. These tools are used by family firms as a new form to connect and collaborate with different stakeholders, so they have the potential to enhance open innovation activities. However, empirical research on the topic remains scarce and is challenging for managers to benefit from all the potential that social media can bring in fostering innovation and to develop dynamic capacities of knowledge management in the family firm context. This work sheds light on this topic.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors explored the importance of 4.0 technologies in data collection from crowds, subsequently examining how new technologies might drive forward the development of collaborative strategies with suppliers, and reduced the resource wasting.
Abstract: Purpose The aim of this research was to explore the mechanisms underpinning open innovation (OI) success and its sustainability in agrifood businesses. First, the authors explored the importance of 4.0 technologies in data collection from crowds, subsequently examining how new technologies might drive forward the development of collaborative strategies with suppliers. Reductions in resource wasting were observed. The role of 4.0 technologies in increasing supply chain sustainability overall was the main focus of the study.Design/methodology/approach This research builds on a single inductive case study method. The authors performed an in-depth analysis of data from an Italian agritech distributor. Data – aside from multiple semi-structured interviews – were collected via several different sources. The results have been summarized in an integrated holistic conceptual framework.Findings The findings show that 4.0 technologies allow for swift information exchanges between consumers, the agritech business and suppliers. As a result, consumers might demand new products and, consequently, the agritech business can arrange new offerings with suppliers, completing the OI and shared value creation circle. Likewise, the possibility of adopting a just-in-time approach of sorts may reduce the wasting of resources. The absorptive capacities and knowledge management capabilities of the agritech business play a fundamental role in OI performance, sustainability and success.Originality/value This research seminally explores how 4.0 technologies and knowledge management techniques can enable OI in agrifood businesses. Additionally, the ways in which OI may foster the development of sustainability-orientated supply chain strategies have been conceptualized.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors propose an open innovation platform design framework, with three components: 1) ecosystems context providing foundation, purpose, and alignment amongst all actors involved; 2) innovation management integrating three stages: creation of reference framework to set the basis and governance policies; definition of support framework to technology, processes, and quality assurance; and planning and leading delivery framework, to ensure the continuity of the platform; and cocreation support consolidating the resource integration and coreation processes.
Abstract: The interacting components of open innovation are complex to assess empirically and theoretically. Open innovation represents a high-potential scheme to share knowledge, and collaborate; however, it needs to be carefully contextualized to succeed. The challenges that open innovation platform design encounters are as follows: attraction motivation of all actors involved; intellectual property management; costs and benefits to keep the stakeholders´ interest; information structure; governance; quality assurance; trust and reliability; and finally associated risks. Built on these challenges, our contribution offers an open innovation platform design framework, with three components: 1) ecosystems context providing foundation, purpose, and alignment amongst all actors involved; 2) innovation management integrating three stages: creation of reference framework to set the basis and governance policies; definition of support framework to technology, processes, and quality assurance; and planning and leading delivery framework, to ensure the continuity of the platform; and 3) cocreation support consolidating the resource integration and cocreation processes. Additionally, we discuss the findings from the analysis of an exploratory multiple-case study regarding the level of approach of the processes and strategies defined in the framework and the designs of open innovation platforms located at Kenya, Mexico, Nicaragua, and United States.
