TL;DR: The eyes ofPeriplaneta are a very dark, uniform colour, and apparently lack pseudopupils, and it is postulated that virtually all insects have them, although they may not be visible.
Abstract: 1. The large compound eyes ofPeriplaneta are covered with irregular rows of low relief facets (10μm high). 2. Measurement of interommatidial angles show large variations in these angles for both horizontal and vertical planes. Trends exist, however, with horizontal interommatidial angles increasing posteriorly from 1.9 ° to 10.0 °, and vertical field angles increasing posteriorly from 1.0 ° to 4.7 °. 3. The maximum composite field of view for each eye is 240 ° in the horizontal plane, and 198 ° in the vertical plane. This results in a dorsal overlap of 40 °, an anterior overlap of 65 ° and a posterior overlap of 56 °. Thus, the necessary anatomical arrangement is present for binocular vision. 4. The eyes ofPeriplaneta are a very dark, uniform colour, and apparently lack pseudopupils. An alternative explanation of the pseudopupil phenomenon to that of Yagi and Koyama (1963) is given and it is postulated that virtually all insects have them, although they may not be visible.

TL;DR: In this paper, a vibration damper for preventing galloping of the line including one or more specifically determined eccentric weights mounted on the line at a position laterally spaced from the axis of the conductor in case of a single-conductor transmission line is presented.
Abstract: In combination with an overhead transmission line a vibration damper for preventing galloping of the line including one or more specifically determined eccentric weights mounted on the line at a position laterally spaced from the axis of the conductor in case of a single-conductor transmission line, or at a position laterally spaced from the vertical plane including the axis of each conductor or the vertical plane including the center line of conductors in case of a multi-conductor transmission line. The eccentric weight thus mounted provides moment of inertia at the particular point where it is mounted. When the single conductor or multi-conductor line moves upward and downward, the conductor is subjected to moment of rotation resulting from the specifically determined eccentric weight as well as to an aerodynamic force caused by a lateral wind acting thereon, whereby the amplitude of the galloping oscillation is effectively suppressed to a desired level in the whole span of the transmission line.

TL;DR: In this article, an elongated horizontally disposed waveguide has a series of holes in one longitudinal side wall dimensioned below cut-off so as to be non-resonant and insensitive to wave length variations.
Abstract: An elongated horizontally disposed waveguide has a series of holes in one longitudinal side wall dimensioned below cut-off so as to be non-resonant and insensitive to wave length variations. The dimensioning and spacing of the holes on the one longitudinal side wall provides for radiation of a fan shaped beam in a vertical plane having a fairly broad elevational angle and an extremely narrow azimuth angle. The fan shaped beam itself is caused to scan through a given angle in azimuth by means of a ridge member reciprocated wholly within a new waveguide structure T shaped in cross section. In addition to the unique waveguide shape and hole design for coupling energy from the waveguide, novel input and output transition structures are provided. The waveguide is typically used in the leading edge of an aircraft wing as a radar antenna.

TL;DR: In this article, the azimuthal deviation between a reference direction and a heading indication given by an instrument aboard an aircraft, particularly for resetting that instrument before takeoff, is determined by a frequency modulation of the outgoing laser beam detected by a monitoring photocell aboard the craft.
Abstract: In order to determine the azimuthal deviation between a reference direction and a heading indication given by an instrument aboard an aircraft, particularly for resetting that instrument before takeoff, a ground installation at an airport includes a radiation source emitting an outgoing laser beam which is periodically deflected by a land-based polygonal drum to sweep between predetermined boundaries in a horizontal plane. As the aircraft taxies across the deflection path of the laser beam, a mirror aboard that craft, retroreflective in a vertical plane, returns that beam toward the source at an instant whose time position within a deflection cycle is a measure of the azimuthal deviation to be ascertained. This deviation can be communicated to the craft by a frequency modulation of the outgoing laser beam detected by a monitoring photocell aboard the craft.

TL;DR: In this paper, an automatic lumbering apparatus for sawing lumber into columns, boards, small sections or other shapes is described. But it is not shown how to obtain a straight cut.
Abstract: Automatic lumbering apparatus for sawing lumber into columns, boards, small sections or other shapes. At least one of conveyor rollers positioned perpendicularly to the vertical plane in which a saw is positioned is angularly displaceable in a horizontal plane relative to the vertical plane of the saw in the direction of travel of the lumber to maintain the lumber in close contact with a ruler member to obtain a straight cut. In addition to those conveyor rollers, a pair of rollers are provided above the horizontal plane of the conveyor rollers and adapted to be brought into frictional contact with the lumber placed on the conveyor rollers. One of those upper rollers is angularly displaceable relative to the vertical plane of the saw to the same extent and in the same direction as the angularly displaceable lower conveyor roller, while the other upper roller is kept perpendicular to the plane of the saw. According to one embodiment of the invention, the upper rollers are adapted to be positively driven, while the lower conveyor rollers are of the nature which are caused to rotate by the frictional contact with the lumber placed thereon. According to another embodiment, the lower conveyor rollers are adapted to be positively driven to transport the lumber placed thereon. In the latter embodiment, none of the upper rollers are necessary.

Abstract: A tractor draft measuring apparatus has a transverse shaft carried by spaced fulcrums, draft links are connected to the shaft to cause the same to bend under loads carried by the links and a sensing member is connected at one end to the shaft and having its other end free to move relative to the shaft. For draft loads the shaft is relatively stiff in the vertical plane and flexible in a horizontal plane and the member is relatively stiff in a horizontal plane and flexible in a vertical plane. Control means for a valve are coupled to the other end of the member and operated by relative movement of the free member in the horizontal plane caused by changes in draft forces on the links, and being insensitive to deflection of the shaft caused by vertical force components on the links.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors described a running animal simulator based on a movable model with first and second legs which are adapted for reciprocal motion relative to each other, and a jump mechanism is adapted to cause the model to rapidly rise and separate the legs thereof when activated.
Abstract: A device for simulating a running animal is disclosed. The device comprises a cabinet, an endless belt located in the cabinet and having a plurality of obstacles located on the outer surface thereof and a movable model. The model has first and second legs which are adapted for reciprocal motion relative to each other. The model oscillates in a vertical plane as the legs are activated to simulate galloping. A jump mechanism is adapted to cause the model to rapidly rise and separates the legs thereof when activated. The jump mechanism may be manually activated for causing the model to rise to a maximum height by synchronizing the actuation of the jump mechanism with the periodic oscillation of the model in the vertical plane.

TL;DR: In this paper, a symmetric inseretion containing an unusually long unobstructed drift space is described, where the insertion can be designed so that all six quadrupole magnets lie at the extreme ends of the insertion.
Abstract: A symmetric inseretion containing an unusually long unobstructed drift space is described. A consequence of its identity transfer properties in the radial plane (2? betatron phase advance) and its transverse reflection properties in the vertical plane (? betatron phase advance) is its invisibility, neither disturbing the betatron oscillation in either plane for particles of synchronous energy nor disturbing the closed (equilibrium) orbit properties for particles of different energy. Because of the different phase advances in the two planes, the insertion can be designed so that all of its six quadrupole magnets lie at the extreme ends of the insertion. This leaves all of the drift space, excepting only that portion required for coil terminations, etc., in a single unobstructed drift space. A thorough parameter study with linear and aberration properties through third order is reported.

TL;DR: The special constraints involved in vertical plane navigation arise from difficulties in the accurate measurement of position, and the limitations of aircraft response.
Abstract: It is generally felt that by causing aircraft to follow accurate climb and descent paths the flow of traffic in terminal areas can be improved. This paper, which was presented at a meeting of the Institute held in London on 29 November 1972, with the President, G. E. Beck, in the Chair, discusses the special constraints involved in vertical plane navigation. These arise from difficulties in the accurate measurement of position, and the limitations of aircraft response. The need to fly at differing speeds and in various configurations, while minimizing passenger discomfort and external noise, is also considered.

TL;DR: In this article, an etched-tungsten probe with a tip radius of about 0.5 µm is constrained to move in a vertical plane by a cone-pivoted arm so that it can be raised and lowered repeatedly over a fixed point while the sample is moved underheath it.
Abstract: Improvements to the positional accuracy of point-contact probes permit smaller features to be investigated in higher-doped semiconductors. An xy stage with an accuracy of within 0-5 µm has been developed for use with an etched-tungsten probe with a tip radius of about 0.5 µm. The probe is constrained to move in a vertical plane by a special cone-pivoted arm so that it can be raised and lowered repeatedly over a fixed point while the sample is moved underheath it. This arm is also counterbalanced so that the probe pressure can be finely controlled. The effectiveness of these measures has been assessed by probing a known (Schottky barrier) potential; an error of 15% over 5 µm is typical.

Abstract: : Simple asymptotic expressions are derived for the lateral wave excited by loop and dipole antennas in or above a foliage layer. It is shown that the horizontal magnetic dipole (loop in vertical plane) has signal strengths comparable with the vertical electric dipole provided the moments for the two antennas are normalized so that they have equal radiation resistances in free-space.

Abstract: Results of ground and flight tests carried out at 109 MHz to study the vertical plane radiation patterns of standard VOR and double parasitic loop counterpoise antennas above ground are discussed. The ground tests consist of the measurement of the fields produced in the quasi-radiation zone of the test antenna The flight tests consist of measuring the far field with the help of an aircraft flying at a constant altitude along chosen radial paths to and from the test antenna. The reduced test results are compared with available theoretical values.

Abstract: A self-propelled crusher unit has a chassis supported by four axles. Two of the axles have axes disposed in a common vertical plane and are fixed in respect of the longitudinal axis of the unit and the two other axles are orientable about vertical axes in respect of the longitudinal axis. Abutments are arranged on the chassis for limiting the rotation of the orientable axles between a first position wherein these axles are parallel to the common vertical plane containing the axes of the fixed axles and a second position wherein the axes of the orientable axles bear upon a vertical axis contained in the common vertical plane and disposed substantially equidistantly between the fixed axles.
