Journal ArticleDOI
Stress-inducible protein 1 is a cell surface ligand for cellular prion that triggers neuroprotection
Silvio M. Zanata,Marilene H. Lopes,Adriana F. Mercadante,Glaucia N. M. Hajj,Luciana B. Chiarini,Regina Nomizo,Adriana Freitas,A. L. B. Cabral,Kil Sun Lee,Maria A. Juliano,Elizabeth de Oliveira,Saul G. Jachieri,Alma L. Burlingame,Lan Huang,Rafael Linden,Ricardo R. Brentani,Vilma R. Martins +16 more
TL;DR: Cell surface binding and pull‐down experiments showed that recombinant PrPc binds to cellular STI1, and co‐immunoprecipitation assays strongly suggest that both proteins are associated in vivo.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cellular prion protein binds laminin and mediates neuritogenesis
Edgard Graner,Adriana F. Mercadante,Silvio M. Zanata,Orestes Vicente Forlenza,A. L. B. Cabral,Silvio S. Veiga,Maria A. Juliano,Rafael Roesler,Roger Walz,Alejandra Minetti,Ivan Izquierdo,Vilma R. Martins,Ricardo R. Brentani +12 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the cellular prion protein (PrPc) is a saturable, specific, high-affinity receptor for LN, involved in the neuritogenesis induced by NGF plus LN in the PC-12 cell line and the binding site resides in a carboxy-terminal decapeptide from the gamma-1 LN chain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Induction of cellular prion protein gene expression by copper in neurons
Lorena Varela-Nallar,Enrique M. Toledo,Luis F. Larrondo,A. L. B. Cabral,A. L. B. Cabral,Vilma R. Martins,Nibaldo C. Inestrosa +6 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that Prnp expression is upregulated by copper in neuronal cells by an MTF-1-independent mechanism, and suggest a metal-specific modulation of Prnp in neurons.
Journal ArticleDOI
Are International Asthma Guidelines effective for low-income Brazilian children with asthma?
TL;DR: By applying the International Asthma Guidelines substantial success was achieved, resulting in moving the patients from crises-orientated management into a chronic care and preventive management mode, as well as decreasing the costs of asthma treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Insights into the physiological function of cellular prion protein.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that PrPc is a high affinity laminin ligand and that this interaction mediates neuronal cell adhesion and neurite extension and maintenance and provides the first evidence for PrPC involvement in signal transduction.
