Journal ArticleDOI
Addition of brain and carotid imaging to the ABCD² score to identify patients at early risk of stroke after transient ischaemic attack: a multicentre observational study.
Aine Merwick,Gregory W. Albers,Pierre Amarenco,Ethem Murat Arsava,Hakan Ay,David Calvet,Shelagh B. Coutts,Brett Cucchiara,Andrew M. Demchuk,Karen L. Furie,Matthew F. Giles,Julien Labreuche,Philippa C. Lavallée,Jean-Louis Mas,Jean-Marc Olivot,Francisco Purroy,Peter M. Rothwell,Jeffrey L. Saver,Orla Sheehan,John Stack,Cathal Walsh,Peter J. Kelly +21 more
TL;DR: The ABCD-I score can improve risk stratification after transient ischaemic attack in secondary care settings, however, use of ABCD³ cannot be recommended without further validation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Carotid plaque inflammation on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography predicts early stroke recurrence.
Michael Marnane,Aine Merwick,Orla Sheehan,Niamh Hannon,Paul Foran,Tim Grant,Eamon Dolan,Joan T. Moroney,Sean Murphy,Killian O'Rourke,Kevin O'Malley,Martin K. O'Donohoe,Ciaran McDonnell,Imelda Noone,Mary Barry,Morgan Crowe,Eoin C. Kavanagh,Martin O'Connell,Peter J. Kelly +18 more
TL;DR: Using combined 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose positron‐emission tomography (FDG‐PET)/computed tomography, the relation between inflammation‐related FDG uptake and stroke recurrence is investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stroke Associated with Atrial Fibrillation – Incidence and Early Outcomes in the North Dublin Population Stroke Study
Niamh Hannon,Orla Sheehan,Lisa A. Kelly,Michael Marnane,Aine Merwick,Alan Moore,Lorraine Kyne,Joseph Duggan,Joan T. Moroney,Patricia M.E. McCormack,Leslie Daly,Nicola Fitz-Simon,Dawn Harris,Gillian Horgan,Emma B. Williams,Karen L. Furie,Peter J. Kelly +16 more
TL;DR: AF-associated stroke occurred in one third of all patients and was associated with a distinct profile of recurrent, severe and disabling stroke, and targeted strategies to increase anticoagulation rates may provide a substantial benefit to prevent severe disabling stroke at a population level.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stroke Subtype Classification to Mechanism-Specific and Undetermined Categories by TOAST, A-S-C-O, and Causative Classification System Direct Comparison in the North Dublin Population Stroke Study
Michael Marnane,Caroline A. Duggan,Orla Sheehan,Aine Merwick,Niamh Hannon,Denis Curtin,Dawn Harris,Emma B. Williams,Gillian Horgan,Lorraine Kyne,Patricia M.E. McCormack,Joseph Duggan,Alan Moore,Gloria Crispino-O'Connell,Peter J. Kelly +14 more
TL;DR: Both CCS and ASCO schemes showed good-to-excellent agreement with TOAST, but each had specific characteristics compared with ToAST for subtype assignment and data retention.
Journal ArticleDOI
Addition of Brain Infarction to the ABCD2 Score (ABCD2I). A Collaborative Analysis of Unpublished Data on 4574 Patients
Matthew F. Giles,Greg Albers,Pierre Amarenco,Murat Arsava,Andrew W. Asimos,Hakan Ay,David Calvet,Shelagh B. Coutts,Brett Cucchiara,Andrew M. Demchuk,S. Claiborne Johnston,Peter J. Kelly,Anthony S. Kim,Julien Labreuche,Philippa C. Lavallée,Jean-Louis Mas,Aine Merwick,Jean-Marc Olivot,Francisco Purroy,Wayne D. Rosamond,R. Sciolla,Peter M. Rothwell +21 more
TL;DR: In secondary care, incorporation of brain infarction into the ABCD system (ABCD2I score) improves prediction of stroke in the acute phase after transient ischemic attack.
