Arboviral Etiologies of Acute Febrile Illnesses in Western South America, 2000–2007
Brett M. Forshey,Carolina Guevara,V. Alberto Laguna-Torres,Manuel Cespedes,Jorge Vargas,Alberto Gianella,Efrain Vallejo,Cesar Madrid,Nicolas Aguayo,Eduardo Gotuzzo,Victor Suarez,Ana Morales,Luis Beingolea,Nora Reyes,Juan Perez,Monica Negrete,Claudio Rocha,Amy C. Morrison,Amy C. Morrison,Kevin L. Russell,Patrick J. Blair,James G. Olson,Tadeusz J. Kochel +22 more
TL;DR: The described arboviruses associated with acute undifferentiated febrile illness in participating clinics in four countries in South America and detailed epidemiological analysis in Iquitos, Peru are provided to provide a better understanding of the geographic range of arbaviruses in SouthAmerica.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalences, genotypes, and risk factors for HIV transmission in South America.
Silvia M. Montano,Jose L. Sanchez,Alberto Laguna-Torres,Paloma Cuchi,María M. Avila,Mercedes Weissenbacher,Margarita Serra,Jose Vinoles,Jose C. Olson,Douglas M. Watts,Deborah L. Birx,Jean K. Carr +35 more
TL;DR: A renewed effort in controlling STIs, especially among MSM groups, could significantly lessen the impact of the HIV epidemic in South America.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular Epidemiology of HIV Type 1 in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Argentina.
Jesse Hierholzer,Silvia M. Montano,Michael Hoelscher,Monica Negrete,Matthew Hierholzer,María M. Avila,Manuel Gomez Carrillo,Jose C. Russi,Jose Vinoles,Araceli Alava,Maria E. Acosta,Alberto Gianella,Ronald Andrade,José Luis Sánchez,Gladys Carrion,J. L. Sanchez,Kevin L. Russell,Merlin L. Robb,Deborah L. Birx,Francine E. McCutchan,Jean K. Carr +20 more
TL;DR: Subtype B is the most common subtype in countries lacking injecting drug use (IDU) epidemics, whereas BF recombinants are more common in countries where extensive IDU epidemics have been documented, suggesting the ontogeny of recombinant strains in particular risk groups in South America.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lineage analysis of circulating Trypanosoma cruzi parasites and their association with clinical forms of Chagas disease in Bolivia.
Ramona del Puerto,Juan Eiki Nishizawa,Mihoko Kikuchi,Naomi Iihoshi,Yelin Roca,Cinthia Avilas,Alberto Gianella,Javier Lora,Freddy Udalrico Gutierrez Velarde,Luis Alberto Renjel,Sachio Miura,Hiroo Higo,Norihiro Komiya,Koji Maemura,Kenji Hirayama +14 more
TL;DR: Blood samples from three different clinical groups of chronic Chagas disease patients from Bolivia were analyzed for their circulating parasites lineages using minicircle kinetoplast DNA polymorphism, finding no significant association between Tc types and clinical manifestations of disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in central Bolivia: Relationships between reservoir hosts, habitats, and viral genotypes
Darin S. Carroll,James N. Mills,Joel M. Montgomery,Daniel G. Bausch,Patrick J. Blair,James P. Burans,Vidal Felices,Alberto Gianella,Naomi Iihoshi,Stuart T. Nichol,James G. Olson,Duke S. Rogers,Milagros Salazar,Thomas G. Ksiazek +13 more
TL;DR: An ecologic assessment of reservoir species associated with the human disease identified a single hantavirus antibody-positive Oligoryzomys microtis from Mineros and three hant Cavendish antibody- positive Calomys callosus from Concepcion, implicating C. callOSus as the host and Laguna Negra virus as the agent responsible for the HPS case near Concepcions.
