Occurrence and effects of plastic additives on marine environments and organisms: A review

TL;DR: This work identified polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), phthalates, nonylphenols (NP), bisphenol A (BPA) and antioxidants as the most common plastic additives found in marine environments and transfer of these plastic additives to marine organisms has been demonstrated both in laboratory and field studies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Microplastics in seafood: Benchmark protocol for their extraction and characterization

TL;DR: The protocol using a KOH 10% solution and incubation at 60 °C during a 24 h period led to an efficient digestion of biological tissues with no significant degradation on all tested polymers, except for cellulose acetate.
Journal ArticleDOI

Optimization, performance, and application of a pyrolysis-GC/MS method for the identification of microplastics

TL;DR: The present method is complementary to μ-Raman spectroscopy as Py-GC/MS identified pigment containing particles as plastic, and some fibers and all particles from sediment and sea surface were identified as plastic.
Journal ArticleDOI

Current frontiers and recommendations for the study of microplastics in seafood

TL;DR: In this article, a review of microplastic studies on shellfish, fish and crustaceans is presented, focusing on the problems related to the definition of the term micro-plastic, contamination at the laboratory scale, sampling and isolation, and quantification and identification.
