Journal ArticleDOI
Habitat structure and the dispersal of male and female bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).
TL;DR: Comparative assessment based on mitochondrial DNA and nuclear markers indicated that neither sex showed a strong bias for greater dispersal on average, implying a mechanism for the evolutionary structuring of populations based on local habitat dependence for both males and females.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rise of oceanographic barriers in continuous populations of a cetacean: the genetic structure of harbour porpoises in Old World waters.
Michael C. Fontaine,Michael C. Fontaine,Stuart J. E. Baird,Sylvain Piry,Nicolas Ray,Krystal A. Tolley,Sarah Duke,Alexei Birkun,Marisa Ferreira,Thierry Jauniaux,Ángela Llavona,Bayram Öztürk,Ayaka Amaha Öztürk,Vincent Ridoux,Emer Rogan,Marina Sequeira,Ursula Siebert,Gísli A. Víkingsson,Jean-Marie Bouquegneau,Johan Michaux,Johan Michaux +20 more
TL;DR: This work applies a combination of recent individual-based landscape genetic approaches to investigate the population genetic structure of a highly mobile extensive range cetacean, the harbour porpoise in the eastern North Atlantic, with regards to oceanographic characteristics that could constrain its dispersal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic and historic evidence for climate-driven population fragmentation in a top cetacean predator: the harbour porpoises in European water
Michael C. Fontaine,Krystal A. Tolley,Johan Michaux,Johan Michaux,Alexei Birkun,Marisa Ferreira,Thierry Jauniaux,Thierry Jauniaux,Ángela Llavona,Bayram Öztürk,Ayaka Amaha Öztürk,Vincent Ridoux,Emer Rogan,Marina Sequeira,Jean-Marie Bouquegneau,Stuart J. E. Baird +15 more
TL;DR: The present results suggest that the fragmentation of harbour distribution range in the Mediterranean Sea was triggered during the warm ‘Mid-Holocene Optimum’ period (approx. 5000 years ago), by the end of the post-glacial nutrient-rich ‘Sapropel’ conditions that prevailed before that time.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trace metal and stable isotope measurements (δ13C and δ15N) in the harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena relicta from the Black Sea
Krishna Das,Krishna Das,Ludo Holsbeek,Julie Browning,Ursula Siebert,Alexei Birkun,Jean-Marie Bouquegneau +6 more
TL;DR: A geographical comparison with existing data from other regions showed general low levels of Hg, Cd, Cu and Zn in the tissues of harbour porpoises from the Black Sea compared to other Atlantic and North Sea areas.
