Journal ArticleDOI
Extensive introgression in a malaria vector species complex revealed by phylogenomics
Michael C. Fontaine,James B. Pease,Aaron Steele,Robert M. Waterhouse,Daniel E. Neafsey,Igor V. Sharakhov,Xiaofang Jiang,Andrew Brantley Hall,Flaminia Catteruccia,Flaminia Catteruccia,Evdoxia G. TL;DR: Pervasive autosomal introgression between these human malaria vectors, including nonsister vector species, suggests that traits enhancing vectorial capacity may be gained through interspecific gene flow, including between nonsister species.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The authors investigated the genomic basis of vectorial capacity and explore new avenues for vector control, sequenced the genomes of 16 anopheline mosquito species from diverse locations spanning ~100 million years of evolution Comparative analyses show faster rates of gene gain and loss, elevated gene shuffling on the X chromosome, and more intron losses, relative to Drosophila.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: These data revealed complex population structure and patterns of gene flow, with evidence of ancient expansions, recent bottlenecks, and local variation in effective population size.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rise of oceanographic barriers in continuous populations of a cetacean: the genetic structure of harbour porpoises in Old World waters.
Michael C. Fontaine,Michael C. Fontaine,Stuart J. E. Baird,Sylvain Piry,Nicolas Ray,Krystal A. Tolley,Sarah Duke,Alexei Birkun,Marisa Ferreira,Thierry Jauniaux,Ángela Llavona,Bayram Öztürk,Ayaka Amaha Öztürk,Vincent Ridoux,Emer Rogan,Marina Sequeira,Ursula Siebert,Gísli A. Víkingsson,Jean-Marie Bouquegneau,Johan Michaux,Johan Michaux +20 more
TL;DR: This work applies a combination of recent individual-based landscape genetic approaches to investigate the population genetic structure of a highly mobile extensive range cetacean, the harbour porpoise in the eastern North Atlantic, with regards to oceanographic characteristics that could constrain its dispersal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic structure in a dynamic baboon hybrid zone corroborates behavioural observations in a hybrid population
Marie J. E. Charpentier,Michael C. Fontaine,E. Cherel,Julien P. Renoult,T. Jenkins,Laure Benoit,Nicolas Barthes,Susan C. Alberts,Jenny Tung +8 more
TL;DR: The results support previous work that indicates a long history of hybridization and introgression among East African baboons and suggest that anubis baboons are in the process of gradual range expansion into the range of yellow baboons, a pattern potentially explained by behavioural and life history advantages that correlate with anubis ancestry.
